For example when hacking my mare alone she will not be bothered about being taked out but she will be much more forward going on the way home than when she is out in company. g. Finally, please give a brief description of what you think separation anxiety is and any other comments you may have on this subject:
Separation anxiety I believe is stressful, resulting in horses calling, pacing stable, pouring ground, running about, being badly behaved when lead/ridden etc when taken away form a herd situation or company of any animal it is used to being with. My mare will happily carry on grazing while others are taken away, or stand quietly by gate, she doesn’t rush to come in either. It’s not my choice, and for the first week she was a little upset and anxious, she would run around for about 10 mins and call occasionally but seems to have adapted well to the situation, which out of my control at present. Her field mate isn’t so calm and calls and calls to her until she comes in or he goes out, even though he has other horses he can see when he comes in or stays in. It’s definitely being separated from my mare that causes his anxiety. He also calls (well more like screams) should I turn her out in the field behind his stable while mucking out. My mare takes no notice of him though and seems totally unbothered by his stress. She has been a bit slow to walk down to the field the last few days but this morning went out had a roll and started grazing so didn't look too bothered about being the only horse out. She's gets turned out at 7am and the others start going out at 8:30. this situation will change in the next few weeks though, which is good as I don't like it really.

The level of food and the weather plays a big role, if left out and the others bought in he can get up to 8-9 but will calm down quickly if given some haylage.

f. Turnout: daytime
g. When your horse/pony is at rest e.g. turned out or stabled, is it usually: with 1 other when turned out with 4+ others when stabled
Section 2
Please answer yes or no to the following and rate the level of separation anxiety your horse displays on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being nothing at all, 10 being extreme
a. Will your horse/pony turn out alone: Yes 5
b. Will your horse/pony be brought in alone e.g. for the vet/farrier/grooming etc: Yes 4
c. Will your horse/pony be stabled alone: Yes 4
d. Will your horse/pony hack out alone: Yes 2
e. Will your horse/pony be schooled alone: Yes 1
f. Will your horse/pony travel alone: Yes 2
g. Finally, please give a brief description of what you think separation anxiety is and any other comments you may have on this subject: Will go anywhere on her own willingly, but doesn't like being left in the field or stables on her own, however not dangerous, just calls and may fencewalk a little, but doesn't panic and will settle after a while, especially if she has hay or good grass to eat. Very good to hack out alone, but will often call on the way out and the way back although never changes her pace or tries to stop. I think she's just telling her friends where she is.
Section 1
a. Breed of horse/pony: Phoenix, Welsh Section D
b. Age: 16
c. Main discipline: hacking/schooling
d. Work: light
e. Feed: forage & hard feed year round

c. Will your horse/pony be stabled alone: Yes 3
d. Will your horse/pony hack out alone: Yes (but not easily) 7
e. Will your horse/pony be schooled alone: Yes 1
f. Will your horse/pony travel alone: don't know, doesn't travel
g. Finally, please give a brief description of what you think separation anxiety is and any other comments you may have on this subject: Happy to be turned out on his own, will just get on with grazing, not as happy if his fieldmate is taken out of the field and he is left on his own but just calls a lot, doesn't run about. If he is brought into the stables on his own he is not too bothered as long as he has hay, but if he is left in on his own, i.e. the other horses taken out, he will call and boxwalk a bit. Whilst difficult to hack out alone, this is due to nappiness ratherthan anything else, if we are on a route that he is confident with he shows no separation anxiety at all. I think it's about not being confident on their own and needing the security of the herd, even if that is only one other horse.
