yay that's 3 and a half Spanish horses in our gang! June - definately people orientated, Briosa is so bored in the field in the snow, when we hay she follows us around and noses in everything we are doing. mrsmills even the premier equine neck cover is taking hair out - I've taken it off and popped a snuggy turnout hood on.

Yes, I'm not using a neck cover either, nich - the PRE girls seem to get quite hot in them anyway, unlike Miss TB who is double-rugged and looking like a michelin horse.
June, I really am terribly impressed with how people-friendly these horses are. When I went to view Riti, she lowered her nose and rested it on my right shoulder. The owners then took me three fields away to see her last year's baby, and he did exactly the same thing!
The breeders were telling me how they build a very strong bond with their owner/keeper and will try their hearts out for you. Makes me feel so sad that my other PRE has had about four different homes in the last 18 months (through no fault of hers, I might add). Still they are a stable little herd now, and will have a home with us until the end of their days.
So looking forward to 2011!
nich and June, have you got photos of your spanish horses - I find it fascinating how similar and yet different they can look.

Lol, of course I've got photos! This one was taken by Sue with Tinta's OH and another arty one! At one of the Becky Holden clinics we have here, looking a tad porky! Starting the beginnings of piaffe. Got a little too much stored energy and it had to go somewhere!

Thank you all for your lovely comments - specialsparkle3 that's a lovely thing to say! I am thrilled to bits with both of my new girls, and will do everything I can to give them the home and life they so richly deserve! Love the photos of your spanish girls, guys. Nich, I can see what a fantastic job you've done on Brio's mane by comparing that photo with the one from the windsor ride. Glad you are having so much fun with your girl, she looks really lovely. June, your girl moves so beautifully - I love the elevated paces of the spanish horses. And boy can she move! Those photos of her eye are absolutely stunning - it makes you feel very humble when you look deep into a horse's eye, I think. My girls are both quite different in type as they are from different breed lines. Riti is a more traditional and heavier type, with a very strong and noble head. She is from the Yeguada Militair lines, and also has the Panadera V bloodlines (found in Olympic standard stallions such as Invasor and Gaucho III). Reyes is much lighter, and has a finer head. I must admit to being very taken with the PRE - a new passion is developing, I think. I just need to learn more about the breed lines!

Beautiful horses! I think PRE horses are stunning Interesting comments re neck covers because Blaze, my cob, has always been hogged and this winter I decided to grow her mane out. It was sticking bolt upright from September to November, then I put a neck cover on and it has all flopped over onto the right side and is growing out beautifully, no rubbing at all. She has a Premier Equine rug. Jas has a Fal Pro and her mane is really long and a little arab that I look after is wearing a Shires rug with a neck and her mane is down to her shoulder! Maybe I'm just lucky Why did they hog a PRE? Is that a common thing?

the hogging is traditional for brood mares, dk why - less effort??
mrsmills if you see my pics on the snow photos thread you will see we now have even more mane than the windsor pics (despite losing quite a bit to the neck cover). that depends on the horse - my Autumn doesn't lose any mane and hers lies more sweetly after a neck rug.
Reyes and Brio are both the finer type, someone said to me there are too many of the thick set types being bred for the English market, apparently they are not as typical as we think and can have problems stemming from the heavy conformation.
oh and another good thing about them is the feet!! our other 2, TB x drafty types, have always needed hoofboots for challenging rides. Brio 3 months out of shoes was dfoing endurance training rides bare.

Thanks Nich, I didn't know that is that just PRE broodmares or all breeds? Showing my ignorance , not had much experience of breeding.

I understand that the hogging is traditional, partly to show good conformation, but also to help with management. They tend to keep the broodmares in large herds, so I guess it makes sense. They also shave the tails - so sad to see the foals with little stumps where their baby tails should be.
Interesting point about the different types of PRE - my understanding was that the military lines tend to be a little heavier in build. There's so much to learn about isn't there!
And OMG, I know what you mean about the feet - aren't they fab? As a TB owner I've experienced many trials (and not many tribulations!) with Millie's awful feet. Both Reyes and Riti are, and always have been, barefoot and have superb feet that will go for hours on a variety of terrain without a problem. Oh, joy!
(Off now to have a look at your snow photos!LOL)
