He is quite possibly signed out of the food chain due to meds he has had in the past, they are given all sorts to keep them on the road. If he is signed out he is more of a liability than if he isnt which could be another reason he is advertised rather than sold to kill.

For me, it would have to depend on his soundness. If he is still sound enough for low level RC stuff, he could make a fantastic schoolmaster for somone.
Many years ago, I had a loan horse who had been gifted to the lady I loaned him from. He was about the same age, and had been a Grade A SJer. He was 'in retirement', but for the next couple of years, he & I did all the local RC competitions - I was just starting out, and he taught me LOADS. I did so much with him. He was not a horse that would ever have been happy with retirement, and the agreement with his previous owners was that he would be PTS once he was no longer sound enough to ride. Towards the end of our years together, he was still sound, but getting a little more sensitive on hard ground. After I gave him up, he was ridden for two or three more years before becoming permanantly unsound & being PTS.
I never write off the oldies - and had this horse been a hand smaller, would have considered him myself. I used to love my old competition horse.

I hope he finds his happy retirement, he deserves it. To be fair to the owner though she does say home more important than money. i got the impression she would drop alot for the right home

Just been trying to persuade my son that a retired international SJ is what I REALLY want for Christmas. He's not biting!! I have got a stable and field for him, but alas no cash to buy him at the moment. Poor old fella, hope someone nice feels as sorry for him as I do. xx

This is a bad market - if you don't ask you don't get. Might be worth letting the seller know that you have a lovely home waiting. Maybe, if he doesn't find a home, then she will let you have him cheaper. Worth asking

Blazesmum, you never know they might gift him for a small amount if you are genuinely interested! Worth trying!

Unfortunately OH has put a block on any more horses. He's probably right - heart ruling head at the moment

Do you have the link to the HandH thread that is discussing him? I used to ride Steps many, many years ago and was only wondering the other day how he was. I used to worship the very ground he walked on.

Kent is a very, very long way away. The transport cost alone would be steep.
I'll chat with my husband this evening.
