Hello
Just a quick poll really to see what people feed their horses and why? I'm talking brands etc.
I currently use Simple Systems for my youngster. He has a tiny amount of LucieNuts a day, and their Total Eclipse suppliment. He does incredibly well on what he gets. He's currently out 24/7 though when it's sopping wet I bring him in, so he gets hay. I use SS because I was advised it has no sugar, cereals etc.
I saw Kelly's thread about TopSpec and just wondered who uses what? I've seen some other forums talking about SS and TS and why some people use one over the other. Just wondered what people thought on here?
Thanks!
Mel

Im using when pony is getting fed... dodson and horrels safe and sound, because basically he's a cob and can live on fresh air.
I have used SS in the past and it's a fab feed..esp when (in my case) the horse had no back teeth to speak of and couldnt chew hay or hay replacers without getting colic... He did get a bad colic and needed surgery.. hence the use of SS, was a god send to him.

Mine get either SS Greengold or Alfa A Lite and linseed meal, with speedibeet added as required. They tend to ignore the Greengold a bit when there's lots of grass in the field.

I used to use Simple Systems some years ago, before it was as popular as it is now!
I then moved on to Top Spec, and am a big fan of their products.
If I were to move on from TS at all, I think I'd try Winergy - I have a lot of respect for their products.

My 2 (big warmblood and mini shettie) are both fed winergy equilibrium low - makes it easier if they have the same - reasons the feed is cereal free, really really low in starch and sugar (lower than happy hoof!) - my shettie has never had lami and i feed him this as a preventative, my big warmblood is very hyper so low sugar is good for him, they both love the winergy The wingery products have excellent amounts of minerals and vitamins and i dont think i really need to feed extra but i do give my warmblood magnesium for his feet, selenevit e for his muscles and they both have access to various mineral / salt licks in the field In winter i also add some alpha a oil and my warmblood gets a big splash of veg oil they also get adlib hay in winter

Nancy is on Top Spec Alfalfa as she is a good doer and doesn't need extra calories, I was also told by my vets that Alfalfa is the best feed for horses with ulcers, or who are prone to ulcers. There are no mollasses or extra sugar in it. Bronte has the alfalfa mixed in with Allen & Page Calm & Condition as she is not a good doer and is having difficulty chewing the chaff due to poor teeth, so I make it nice & sloppy for her ;D. I love the Calm & Condition and have used it for years, its barley & mollasses free and it great for weight gain. they both get Hoof Mender as a supplement which has all the nutrients for healthy hoofs, and I have seen great results from that.

Zack has Dengie Alfalfa A oil because of suspected (not actually diagnosed) ulcers, with Graze On (chopped dried grass) Hay/haylage. The suppliments he's on are Premierflex plus (joints) Biotin (hooves) and Bioguard (digestion). He's been on this since february when he was ill and is looking the best he's looked since I've owned him.

All our polo ponies are on Top Spec Balancer, Alfa A Lite, micronised linseed (which you can get from Charnwood Milling considerably cheaper than from SS!) and a tablespoon of salt. We use Top Spec Balancer because it has the highest vitamin and mineral specification of all the feeds on the market. SS do good unmolassed feeds but their Total Eclipse product does not have a broad range of vitamins and minerals and cannot really be called a balancer. It is the one product that lets them down IMO.

I feed straights - unmolassed beetpulp, alfalfa pellets, micronized linseed, minerals balanced to forage.
At the moment, it's Speedibeet and Dengie's alfalfa pellets, but the brand really doesn't matter much to me, as long as quality is okay - only one ingredient anyway.
I prefer this over bagged mixes because a) I know exactly what my horse is getting and b) no bagged mix can provide exactly what my horse needs because it doesn't take into account what nutrients he gets through his forage.
SS is going in that direction (offering straights), but frankly, the above a cheaper and easier to find locally.

Another fan of Top Spec (Balancer and Cool Condition cubes) here - it's done wonders for my TB who normally loses condition in the winter. Also feed Alfafa A Oil, Kwik Beet, and salt.

My good doer has Top Spec top chop lite because it's got no molasses and very low sugar and starch content. He has top spec lite balancer (will be on anti lam version in spring) because it's got a much better analysis than any other balancer I've looked at and is a fibre based pellet rather than protein.
He also has MagOx and a little salt. If he needs a bit extra in winter I'll add micronised linseed or change to top spec alfa.
MTA: I only really choose top spec chops over SS because my local feed shop will order Top Spec so it's easier to get hold of than SS (the facilities staff at work get fed up of me getting bags of food delivered to work!)
