16.2 TB X 16 years old. Problem - Rears, bucks, kicks out and barges past the handler when coming in from the field (not always in that order . Will also sometimes charge at people in the field. With this in mind he is in a paddock on his own, but able to go nose to nose with horses in the adjoining field. Jazz can also be difficult when having his rugs put on/adjusted and is grumpy when being groomed under his belly and along flanks. Following some simple ground work exercises (Start/stop/back up/stand) during which he reared only once! I broke down leading him in from the field into small steps. Forward a few strides then stop back up a step and carry on. This kept his focus on me and reminded him that I could move his feet. Once he started to look on me as an effective leader he began to relax. Jazz made good progress during the session, but did not, in my opinion relax into the work as well as I hoped. Taking into account Jazz's behaviour when being groomed and having his rugs sorted the owner is having him checked for gastric ulcers, to be on the safe side.

Loading session with Jazz today (9th Feb) as he is going to the vets to have an endoscopy shortly and has not been loaded since the present owners got him 2 years ago!
He walked pretty nicely from the field, and after a few minutes work on the Dually halter we approached the lorry. Breaking it down into small steps. Jazz thought going to the side of the ramp would be a good idea. Luckily I was able to ask him to step onto the ramp from the position he was in, which took him a little by surprise I think. After doing this three or four times and really letting him know when he had done the right thing (ie coming forward, or simply showing a 'try') Jazz was loading like a pro.
Looking good for loading him to go to the vets in a couple of days.

Jazz does not have gastric ulcers. No other physical prolems have been detected, so we can work on his behaviour knowing, as far as possible, that he is not in any discomfort.

Great session today ;D
Nice calm relaxed Jazz. I think three things contributed to this.
1) Owners have been doing their 'homework' 2) The sun was out 3) Jazz has just been started on something called 'rig-calm' Although he had only had 24 hours on this.
He didn't rush any gates, respected the handlers space, did not attempt to rear when leading from field. We had him going over tarpaulin, accepting plastic bags on sticks all over his body and being happy to be groomed along flanks and under belly.
