Very sorry to hear this, maxicob, and thoughts with all concerned.
Trespass is primarily a civil matter, but if damaged is caused it can become a criminal one. Sometimes the police will have traveller-liason people who can help - I've known them to, for example, be able to broker a deal for a group of travellers and their vans to leave farmland in 24 hours, which they stuck to and left without incident. Second Catrin's suggestion re. talking to them for advice.

All I offer is sympathy for Heidi. There is very little that the Police can do, and I think you were fortunate that they turned up within 20 minutes. These "sorts" of people always go round in a gang with a minimum of three together at any time. They are a law unto themselves. If you get annoyed then you are being racist. Our neighbour's gate was stolen a couple of nights ago, with 120 sheep in the field and back in the summer a couple of men were caught int he act of stealing one of our gates. When challenged by the lady they just said "What are you going to do about it?" The answer is of course, there is nothing she could do.
We frequently get hares poached and there is constant petty theft of tools, etc.

:-( RIP these kinds of people are not the traditional travellers, they are just vile excuses for humans who think they are exempt from law, paying taxes and being considerate.

RIP Heidi and I am glad everyone else is unhurt physically despite upset and angry. sadly whether its travellers in rural areas or others in towns and cities there are those who just do what they want and laugh at the police and law abiding people.

I'm amazed and honestly surprised as here in Ireland, the travellers don't generally trespass to shoot in that way. They sound like a bunch or hardened criminals. How can they just march onto the place like that. So sorry to hear about the old mare. Dreadful.

Having dogs around livestock and not under control is a criminal matter - but the police are not usually prepared to take action when faced with people like this.
