Man from Snow River.. must be 1 as didn't know there was a sequal.... Into the West The Black Stallion.. agree plot doesn't really go anywhere but it is sooooooo worth it for the Island scenes.. love Pharlap and Seabescuit .. and yes there are some amazing horsey scenes in Lord of the Rings.. The bit in the first film where Arwen and Frodo are chased by the Ring Wraiths... amazing battle scenes .. apparently all extras... now I would have loved to have been an extra charging across the New Zealand grasslands on Nita of course... we would both have really loved that... so anyone making a film in the UK who needs an extra of horse and rider galloping like the wind please get in touch....

Daz... we've had the Krull conversation before.
Also, horses in TLOTR films were good, but Shadowfax was the wrong colour. "By day his coat glistens like silver, by night it is like a shade, and he passes unseen" So says Gandalf at The council of Elrond. So I have always seen Shadowfax as a sort of silvery iron grey. The Flight to the Ford scene in The Fellowship was spectacular - ( if wrong: but I'm a Tolkien purist, or fanaticist!)

Yes the Flight to the ford shouldn't be Arwen.. but it is there in the orignal book... it's supposed to be Arwen's brother isn't it?..

It was an elf called Glorfindel. I dont think he was Arwen's brother. The thing is that Tolkien didn't really write much of a part for Arwen, she was just there in the background, hanging around in Rivendell waiting for Aragorn to get himself to be King so she could marry him.
Portia, dont worry, the horse in the film was stunning, tho I liked Arwen's horse in the chase better. It's a sad life being a total Tolkien Nut. By the way, Glorfindel's horse (or Arwen's in the film) was called Asfaloth.

Oh well remembered... Asfaloth was def my fav... and that ridden chase has to go down as one of the all time greats.. along with the Man from Snow River riding down that scree slope after the herd... both fantastic bits of ridding... makes Badmington and Burghley etc look very tame

Pharlap- always makes me cry for hours- even more so because it was a true story. (haven't got it anymore though and can't seem to get it on DVD- gutted)
Horse Whisperer- the film is rubbish but the book is fab.
Black beauty
Black Stallion- because always reminds me of my wanting a Black Arab Stallion.

I forgot about seabiscuit.
I managed to get Man from Snowy River 1 (1981) and 2 (1987) off ebay from OZ and Pharlap can't believe how few people have seen it! They are great films I remember from childhood. I never saw MFSR 2 til I bought it its based on the poem by Banjo Paterson (1895). number 2 was sad as his faithful dun mountain pony dies and he has to tame the bumby stallion. Think I'll go and watch them again.

As a child my favorites were Blue Fire Lady (am I the only one who has seen this?), National Velvet, International Velvet (dreadful but I love it anyway), Black Stallion movies, Phar Lap.
As an adult I love Hidalgo, Seabiscuit, LOTR movies.
Not a horsey movie but I love A Knights Tale and managed to buy a horse just like Heath Ledger's jousting horse - I almost called him Lord Ulrich too, but my friends refused to speak to me until I changed my mind!
