some one reverses into me when riding Toffee out this afternoon pootling along the verge towards the common, as i have done for over 3 years now, come up towards a strip of gravel drive way, have started to slow down as the person in car has just put it into reverse. Then they knock it back out of reverse and havent moved so i presume they are letting me past so i carry on walking, step off verge onto road to avoid gravel, and then all of sudden driver puts it back in to reverse and starts reversing at me at speed so im gee-ing Toffee on and shouting, gets closer and im screaming and then he actually hits her on the back end, luckily not hard as she jumped forward getting legs out the way as he is still reversing and turning into us, and then drives away!!!!!!!! This is a resident that lives there too! some one else saw and stopped their car to see if we were ok, which luckily we were, and couldnt believe what he had seen! i carried on going as all was fine, and then walked back past house 5/10mins later, and there was still no one there. went and spoke to neighbour and he was shocked, and said he seemed a nice person, which im hoping is the case and that he didnt actually do it on purpose, but still!??! he must have been blind, not looked in any mirrors or tbh even opened his eyes, or just didnt care!! I will be going and knocking on his door tomorrow morning when go back over to sort toffee in the morning and ask what the heck he was playing at! If he turns out to be vile and it wasnt an accident and i dont get an apology i will be reporting him to the police!

I'm sorry but I'd be reporting to the police if he can't see what behind him while reversing he shouldn't be on the road. If you leave it they will be asking why you left it. I got run off the road by a school bus driver and reported her, a friend said she had caused several accidents with other road users if the police knew about those ones she would have been charged.
Remember you might be saving someone elses life!

That's what I'd do, we all make mistakes and we don't always do the 'right thing' having done so, due to embarrassment or whatever. As you say if you don't get an apology, take it further.
To be on the safe side, write a factual statement of what happened before you go to see the driver, and then another of what was said during the meeting. Have you got the name and address of the witness.
Good luck!

Sod going to see the driver - take it to the police. That's a SERIOUS driving offence. If he can't see a sodding great horse, with a hi-viz clad rider on its back, then how is he going to see an ordinary pedestrian?!
SOME drivers seem to forget that people walking behind their vehicles have right of way...!

I would report it to the police too, just so at least the details are logged. Hope you and horse are OK.

Report it to the police, explain to them that there was a witness (if you can remember their name/car registration all the better) and that you are wanting them to have a word with him, if your pony is stiff/sore then I would follow it through if you felt it necessary. They will ask why you have left it, but report it just incase your pony does come up lame in the next few days.
Given he didn't stop after hitting you it doesn't sound like the nicest person in the world and I certainly would NOT be going round to see him, leave that to the police. You were lucky that you both came off unscathed, perhaps in future it would be better to ride on the road rather than the verge so that you are more visible?
If anything if the police have a word with him he might take a little more time to check his mirrors/blind spot and might save an even worse accident from happening.

The law is that anyone who suspects they've been involved in an incident/accident on the road should stop and not just drive off on the assumption everything is OK. I'm sure he heard that he'd hit something, even if he didn't realise it was you. But he should have checked anyway. One might say it's a condition of having a driving license! So report it to the police. He's very unlikely to be prosecuted if you don't want to press charges, but driving away from the scene when he's clearly backed into something, without checking out what it was, is a serious matter.

I think the incident was on private land & did not occur on the public highway. If so, I don't think the police will want to know, but I still say report it anyway and to the BHS please, who keep statistics of accidents and near misses. In fact, ask them for advice on how to proceed. They are very helpful.

well i went round today whilst my sister was sorting Toffee, she was fine, and YO checked her last night also. Lady answered the door who had been in the car also, which i didnt realise. She said she had seen us on the other side of car, as in gone past but didnt know that they had actually driven into me and said they just hadnt seen me worrying as i had fluro tabard on, hat band, and Toffee isnt exactly green and brown in colour She was really apologetic, tbh probably mortified, asking several times if we were both ok, and said they are cautious of horse and riders as they know not all get on with traffic etc. said will be triple-y cautious from now on. just shows when u think ur paying attention, sometimes you obviously really arent !!
