Your instructor sounds very sensible. I have had similar problems with my pony. He was eventually diagnosed with arthritis in both hocks and referred stiffness in his back. When I started to bring him back into work I started riding my instructors school master. Initially I couldn't get him into canter because I was too tense. When I finally got him cantering nicely I didn't want to stop! I did get my pony cantering out on a hack in a straight line, but I am giving him a break from the school so I don't know how that will go. Good Luck. Lx

Blimey, should have read this before posting my thread! Looks like this is a more common problem than I thought Hope you get it sorted out, let us know how you get on.
