I bought, three year old, Arizona in September this year and I've done lots of groundwork with him and just spent lots of time getting to know him. About a week ago I started to lean over his back. First one side then the other for about a minute. This morning it felt right to sit on him - so I did it. It was such a lovely feeling. He was a real good boy and didnt seem bothered so I got on from both sides and sat there for about a minute each time. Then he had loads of praise and a carrot! Nice way to end 2009. And because I'm very proud of him a photo! WISHING YOU ALL A HAPPY AND PEACEFUL NEW YEAR! ;D

What a lovely horse and well done for doing it slowly and when you feel ready so many people want to get them backed asap and too early my 3 year old is far too immature (or thick as my hubby says) so will just do some in hand showing 2010 and see what she is like in Feb 2011 if not ready will leave it till she is a 5 year old if they are not ready it is just hard work for me and for the pony. Good luck with your horse in 2010

Brilliant! It`s great when backing is just a natural progression. My Ginger`s was like that when Sarah W first sat on him. He just turned round, licked her boot and seemed to say "Oh, it`s you is it?" and then had another mouthful of hay LOL.
Wishing you a very Happy New Year with Arizona.

Well done! hopefully I will be following your example soon! I leant over my boy (still with feet on the mounting block) for the first time two days ago and am so pleased!
Lovely pic, he is absolutely beautiful, best of luck!

Thanks everyone for your kind comments. I will be carrying on with Arizonas training but very slowly. There is absolutely no rush with this little horse. A friend asked me what I hoped to achieve in 2010. I said that by this time next year I'll be more than satisfied if I can walk safely round the school on a happy, relaxed Arizona. When I first considered having a youngster I set all sorts of timescales - I'd be doing this with him in May etc. Now I've got to know him and have been lucky enough to spend lots of time with him I realise how wrong I was. We will work at our pace - even if it means fairy steps all the way! Good luck everyone with your youngsters.
