NO names being mentioned, but as I watched H&C tv last night and watched some showjumping, I couldn't help notice one horse had bald patches where the spurs would be. Surely that is excessive if it's marked the horse enough to go bald. I did think the riders who all wore spurs, and had shorter stirrups all invariably had some spur contact when cantering around (by accident).
I do wonder how SJ would be if it could be done without spurs and whips LOL, you'd be able to tell if the horse was doing it because it wanted to, not doing it to avoid a whip/spurring ?

I hate seeing everyone in competition using spurs - I totally agree, it would be really interesting to see them banned, I went to Olympia and watched children competing all wearing spurs and all using them the whole way round.
I shared a horse until recently and he was quite dead to the leg and my friend resorted to always riding in spurs and really tried to persuade me to as well. Almost by chance I had a Ride With Your Mind lesson and bought a book and tried keeping my leg well away from his sides and only touching him when I wanted him to react and it was like riding a different horse! I am SO pleased I didn't give in!
BTW... I don't think spurs should mark the horse unless they are used excessively but presumably could do if misused.

Same goes for Eventing and any other equine discipline Lulu, and I quite agree

I would love to see how they managed without the huge amount of tack, bits, spurs and whips in the showjumping world. At the British Open and HOYS I saw most of the showjumpers with so much tack on - I wouldnt even know where to start removing it let alone putting it on. And no I dont think spurs should mark the horse.

I do have to admit to riding Molly in spurs, i try to avoid it where possible but she is too big for me really and since i broke my knee my leg doesnt actually work whilst im sat on her. But i do hate the excessive wearing of them, they seem to be a craze! And it always upsets me when you see bald patches, ive only ever seen it on clipped hoses though and didnt know if it was because the coat was shorter? I found out a few months ago one of mine had their side ripped open when previous owner lost balance over a fance and was riding in really long spurs.

When i was on a yard a couple of years ago a lady had a really nice horse called Wurzel. Now she had bought him for show jumping and he started to nap and play up. We didn't really see what was going on as she would always ride when we weren't there. Then one day when i was looking after theyard i had to change Wurzels Rug. Poor man had blood runing down his sides. I did tell the yo and also mentioned to the owner in a roundabout type of way what i had seen. A week later she had moved her horse.
You can't tell some people.

agree, when you see them riding the spurs are pushed into the skin, and so mark them. I hate the total disgregard for the horse and the gross misuse of them!
I have also tried riding legs away on riding school horses and they responded brilliantly! x

I know at college suade chaps were banned due to leg movement rubbing the horses sides and causing marks like you describe. Some horses are very sensitive, we have one at our yard who has bald patches everywhere from his rug, we've tried different rugs, had the fit checked by various people and he has had a bib and full lycra suit, still he gets rubs, that's him and his skin. He's tb and no we can't leave him unrugged unfortunately.

Ella - have you tried sewing silk patches in the rug. I've known that to help sensitive skinned horses.
I have only worn spurs when riding two of the horses I owned over many years and would only recommend them if the rider has good balance and control of his/her legs. A very gentle feel of them was all I applied and was all that was ever needed. Both the horses were with me 'til they died and I had a good relationship with both, one being my horse of a lifetime. I also wore suede chaps (long and short) for most of my day to day riding but never rubbed the hair off any horse! I didn't grip with my calves so perhaps that helped!

The first horse I loaned didn't only have missing hair on her 'spur areas', she also had raised, tough patches of skin! I was told 'dig the spurs in!!' - to stop her napping. Thank god I had already got the book (Perfect Manners) and had already begun to change my way of thinking. But very ashamed to say I did it, once, and horse let out a groan . Thank goodness for the IH way of things, or else I wouldn't have known any different - although I would have felt bad but possibly wouldn't have figured out why as quickly

If i had spurs on my horse, she would be off, got too many gears as it is :L
Abuse of spurs and whips should be a crime and only for people who know how to use them should.
