We have the joy of sharing our field with a herd of about 40 deer so the grass is never lush or long (one of the down sides of Ashdown Forest!). They manage fine on it in summer with no hay but taking hay away in winter is not an option. When I got my boy 4 weeks ago he was massively obese, I am feeding him about 4 slices of hay a day (2 am, 2 pm) and a small breakfast (handful of alpha and nuts) and he's lost a bit of weight. Without the hay he'd be losing it far too fast!
