Jill, Caspar is beautiful and looks the epitomy of undangerousness. Trust me he wasn't - he spooked at everything, a local professional rider wouldn't ride him and I would only ride him when there was someone else around. He changed largely through MagOx, but as I'm sure you know, that doesn't change your awareness of what he/she can or might do. The answer to that came from Mark Rashid at one of his clinics here, or rather from Kathleen, and it was to have a plan of what to do if things do get hairy. Usually it is to circle them until you feel their adrenaline levels subside, and that means no rides on roads or narrow bridleways for a while, but once you know what to do about the situation you find yourself in, it really does enable you to progress. And Mark also pointed out how counterproductive (and therefore unnatural) it is for a prey animal to waste huge amounts of energy spooking at things that they should know aren't really that scary. So I know Caspar really shouldn't be that way - I bred him and knew every minute of his history. What he needed was to come down off planet spook long enough to learn to cope - hence the MagOx and his subsequent learning.
