I know it's nice to know our Grammar (she's a lovely old lady) but it would be sad if, due to a less 'classical' education, people were to feel embarassed about expressing their views on this site.

Shouldn't this thread be in the non-horsey section

Spelling and minor grammar informality bothers me less on a forum like this but I have to admit long sentences with no full stops commas or anything else tend to amke me feel rather breathless and irritated and I tend to switch off Hellloooooo Anyone there..... Text speak reminds me of medieval English for some bizarre reason. It might be its onomatopaeic (and that may well be spelled incorrectly) nature. Old and baggy as I am, I quite like it

Doesn't bother me in the slightest, so long as the content of the message is meaningful. Being intelligent around horses doesn't mean you are brilliant at expressing yourself in words. What really does bug me, is bad grammar on posters (particularly apostrophes in plurals) or in pop songs, because that is what children see and hear every day, and the more they see and hear it, the more the bad grammar seems to be correct. I drive everyone in my office mad by ruining their favourite songs when I point out the bad grammar!

I would have to admit to being a gramatical pedant too, and I do occasionally get bugged by incorrect use of there, their, they're. BUT, it isn't that important, and I can usually understand the gist of the posts.
However, I would put in a small plea for at least some punctuation. Full stops maybe, as a minimum, and possibly the occasional comma. There are some posts that I no longer bother to read as I simply can't decipher them as they have no punctuation. Yes, maybe that's me being lazy, but no lazier than the original poster!

I know I will most likely get slated for this post! Reading many other posts, I find it difficult to decipher the content purely because of the lack of intelligence in using punctuation marks, paragraphs and capitals. How can we call ourselves intelligent? Granted it happens on every website forum you visit. Why has the English written word taken a dive and why be so lazy? Can't people use a dictionary or the spell checkers provided on websites/computers? Oh dear when posting a thread like this you should at least get your own punctuation perfect. You have not left a space between the question mark and the next sentence in your last paragraph. Tut tut! If we can presume ourselves to be intelligent enough to read another species well surely we can manage a little bad grammar? You may put people off posting who need advice. That would not very very considerate or intelligent

Should any of us be making comments that blatantly discriminate against these people? Should we all take a grammar test before being allowed to join the DG? Text speak is a definite no, but surely the spirit of the DG would be irretrievably lost if it were limited to those people who deem themselves grammar experts? Capital letters and full stops, together with paragraphs, would be good. But to nitpick over spelling and the use of the apostrophe is, to me, an indication that some people need to get a life. or spend more time with their horses!

Please consider making allowances for those of us holding a sleeping baby in one hand and typing with the other ;D.

Only read the first page - my take is, that yes, sometimes I may feel irritated by poor grammar and spelling, but as far as I am concerned, that is MY problem.
I did open a thread earlier today, and then close it again very quickly, because the spelling was so bad that I had a problem concentrating on the content. And again, that was MY problem.
Is there really a valid reason to make anyone else feel bad about it?

Please consider making allowances for those of us holding a sleeping baby in one hand and typing with the other ;D. In my case a fresh buttered crust, but basilhorse, you missed the amazing opportunity for a dangling modifier. You could at least have written: "Please consider making allowances for those of us holding in one hand a sleeping baby and typing with the other." Then we could have envisaged your typing with the awake baby. ;D The other day I overheard a woman tell her friend, "I can't find a wallet for a man with a zip, anywhere." I was tempted to ask where he had his zip, but didn't like to. Hope baby's second Christmas was a great one.

LOL I agree it's your problem! I rarely notice bad spelling so don't have this problem! Mmmm, I wonder why that could be? The other day I overheard a woman tell her friend, "I can't find a wallet for a man with a zip, anywhere." I was tempted to ask where he had his zip, but didn't like to. Now this sort of error is my worst ( ) bad grammar offense!
