I just use normal hoof oil. Put it on all over the inside of the foot and the frog and it keeps the snow off. It certainly helps my fell pony who is out in the snow. It does still collect but doesn't seem as compacted as without it.

I too remember the axel grease days. It's been a while since I had a shod horse and without shoes I find they build up very little before it drops out so haven't had to find anything new.

Has anyone on her tried butter? Just a thought, we never get enough snow where I am to have to worry, but thats what I use on the runners of my sledge and it does the trick and keeps it sliding along with no clogging!
