Lemon (Citrus Limonum) is made from the rinds of lemons. It has the fresh smell of lemons and is pale greeny-yellow in colour. Lemon Oil is a very strong bactericide and also helps to stimulate the action of white blood corpuscles. This means lemon is very useful in treating wounds or infection. It is also haemostatic and will help staunch the flow of blood from cuts. It can also help lower the temperature.
For much of the above conditions lemon juice can be as effective as lemon oil.
Surprisingly for such an acid fruit lemon will regulate acidity in the body as the citric acid is neutralised by the digestion process (when drinking lemon juice in water – don’t drink lemon oil!) Lemon is also a good general tonic for the digestive system, and for conditions such as gout which is caused by a build up of Uric acid in the joints.
Therefore lemon juice and honey in warm water is a pretty good cure all.
Lemon essential oil can be used, sparingly, in massage blends to help with all the above conditions and in a room burner will deodorise the house and clear the mind. Lemon oil can be a skin irritant.
Another good use for lemon essential oil is in the treatment of warts and verrucae - just dab a bit of the oil directly on the verruca morning and night, avoiding the surrounding skin, and keep it covered with a plaster in the daytime and open at night. This has often been found to work when prescribed and bought creams have failed.
Lemon is Top Note, high intensity, fresh and strong.
