Beenie has had two absesses and this is what I did: Washed it out with hibiscrub everyother day (give it a really good wash out) and then poultice it every other day for about 2 weeks. keep checking on it and try and get the hibi scrub right into the hole where the absess was.

This isn't a dig at any individual, but why are people still replying to this thread with basic advice on how to deal with an abscess, while the horse is now seriously ill in hospital with septicemia. It only takes a minute to read the replies and updates from the OP!

i guess tho it is still providing information for others who may come along with the same problem and not know what to try.

I know, I would just personally find it insulting if I were the owner... sorry!

All advice is useful even if not relevant to my horse at this present time. An update: After extensive x-rays and blood tests the vet has confirmed a bacteria infection (ecoli +? +? I can't remember the others) evidently usually seen in cattle. He operated yesterday to clean out the hoof, scrape the pedal bone as the infection was eating away at the bone and de-nerve the hoof so that she would be able to weight bear if she came round. Luckily she is still with us, I had prepared myself for the worse. She came round from the anasthetic and is still fighting . Bless her. Her foal is begining to settle at home without her but still neighs a lot and is staying close to his friends.

Thankyou so much for the update shirecross. Strength still being sent to her, sounds like she's fighting as hard as she can. Bless her. ((hug)) and strength for you too, you must be exhausted.

I will close my contribution to this thread now. If anyone would like me to pm them with my mare's continuing progress please leave your name. Thanks to everyone for their contribution. As a parting piece of advice I would recommend anyone with what looks like developing into a major problem go to a veterinary hospital don't rely on your local vets. They may try their best but are not equiped for the more serious illnesses. I speak from experience as I lost my lovely 5 year old mare 2 years ago when I followed my local vets advice and by the time she had been referred to Robert Eustice it was too late to save her. It is a problem for people like myself who live in a rural area and a veterinary hospital is 2 and a half hours away. Bye bye.
