Strangely enough citronella hasn't been banned completely, it's not licenced for use in fly sprays but can be used in coat shine products, thats why NAF do a citronella Shine & Show There is also a fly spray (think it's one of the top sellers in America) that couldn't get licenced over here as a fly spray so got approved for sale as a 'premises spray' instead!

Pretty much 5ml of everything added to 500ml of water, which makes the concentrate. The concentrate then gets diluted further and will make a total of 1500 or 2L of actual spray, depending on how strong you want it to be.
Horseflies & normal flies - Neem works best. Midges - either Bog Myrtle & Eucalyptus together or sometimes use Cypress oil which also seems to work quite well.
I like Lavender & Geranium for their antiseptic properties, which Neem also has.
To be honest I've never felt the need to add citronella, though you could if you wanted to.

The great thing about Essential Oils is that several different ones will do more-or-less the same job, so if one doesn't suit or is not available you can use a different one. So Citronella is not necessary as a fly repellent, although it is a very good one. On the other hand, oils that do the same 'general' job also have very subtle differences so if you are not trying to get rid of bugs but are trying to heal specific issues you can become quite accurate in matching 'cure' to 'problem' with a little trial to start with. Regarding 'Nature Identical' laboratory made oils - actually they never can be Nature Identical, they can only have a very similar aroma - which is absolutely not the same thing at all. We call it 'aromatherapy' but it is not the smell that does the job, it is the subtle cocktail of chemicals in the Essence that are derived from the plant source. In tests (such as Gas Chromatography) some elements are present in such tiny amounts they can hardly be measured - so when making copies these elements are usually left out, and sometimes there are even traces of chemicals that can't be identified - and these are also left out in copies. That means that the 'Synergy' does not work. All the elements in a natural essential oil work together synergisticaly to boost or reduce the effects of other elements. Mother Nature knows what she is doing. This also applies when you blend several oils together - the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.
That's why I chose the name 'Synergy' for my business.
