Frank has developed it this year and the only thing that's helped him is a fly rug (Shires £50) and the Nettex stick applied to his tail.
I cut the neck off the rug to stop him boiling and also spray it with deet (for the midges) and fly repellent (for the bigger ones) and it helps. His tail is just starting to grow back.
The long grass doesn't help as Frank's itching went into overtime when we had to change fields into the longer grass.

I have a secret recipe that is meant to be a miracle cure for sweetitch. I have only ever had one pony with it, so i am no expert, but my work has just bought a pony with sweetitch. One of my parents clients, who are VERY horsey, gave me a recipe. I havent got it at hand at the mo, and im just going out, but i will post later. Its all stuff you can get from boots, or chemist, so not at all expensive, and they swear by it. Cured a really bad case on a small welsh pony they had! Will be back wen i have 5mins! :-)

he was never i sickly foal, but he is now, ive had every thing done, the sweetitch i feel is a result of his auto immune system failing him, vets are baffled, or were they have just run out of idea's,

Your place is so full of trees and the river is nearby so presumably some of the land is wet? Also muck middens and dung piles plus other farm muck and animals breed midges, he has probably been eaten by them since he was born. When I moved here from Clayton-le-Moors my SI pony stopped rubbing overnight. Location plays a very important part for sufferers. If they can grow up in an area that is not midge heaven maybe their bodies get exposed to midge bites more gradually and cope better? Most of them are sensitised over their two year old summer and start with symptoms the following spring.

Thanks HV, will try that! I hate to admit that rugging does seem the way. Robtser wears a Rambo rug head to tail and then Boett fly mask. I attempt to spray the bare bits but he clears off as soon as I try! He does scratch when he can but he cannot break the skin like he was before. We are in THE worst place for SI!

The Sweetitch Centre sells them, and they are helpful about how to measure for them as well. www.sweet-itch.co.uk/ They are a nightmare to get off and on though, I much prefer a good fastening fly rug with integral neck for mine, but then he isn't as severe as some.

got a pagony rug,,,, £190 now in bits, his new Rambo seems to be doing the trick, but i still think the midges can get inside, ive ordered a snuggly hoods body neck face which will be removed from the eyes downwards, leggings and sheath cover, price you dont want to know, if anyone would like to buy a pagony hood never used i have one, the rugs are available from devoza saddlery in lincs, the devoza rugs with necks are like a pullover and a pain to get on a 2 year old, who just gets plain fed up with being faffed with with, my theory with the itching is like us if they scratch a bite it just gets worse, so far so good, my freind heather aka staff ,jill, lol did some research so we have mixed Benzyl Benzoate, with pure neem oil, and water and it seems to work, plus im going to try and feed some dryed neem, if i feel he could benifit from it, he is such a lovely boy and i hate to see anything wrong with him, he is my second born baby,

The SI centre is literally 5 miles up the road from us. We bought a Boett about 3 years ago when the Rambo SI Hoody finally fell apart after 2 years. Rosie shredded it on the hawthorne hedges in one night! End of Boett blanket and she has never been rugged for SI since. I think the heat inside a rug makes her worse. I'm trying to bath her weekly this year. From what I'm reading on here I think maybe Rosie's SI is not so bad. She has been on Feedmark Equidermis all year round for about 3 years now and I'm sure it has made an improvement.

Our mini shetty is on piriton this year and, so far, has not needed rugging. Our chemist ordered in 1000 tablets for us @ £13, he's on 4 morning and night. Last year went through 3 rugs and was continually sweaty and uncomfortable.
