Explain why an aroma has an effect on our emotions.
When we inhale, our Olfactory organ detects aromas from the airborne molecules. Almost immediately, the molecules interact with the brain via the Limbic system. The Limbic system is connected to areas of the brain which influence our hormone balance, heart rate, blood pressure, memories, breathing etc. This is known as 'The Emotional Brain'.
Each oil has their own influence on us, from calming and relieving to to uplifting and stimulating. The inhalation of Essential Oils can therefore affect our moods directly.
How would you use essential oils to help baby/young child to get to sleep? What oil(s) would you use?
Inhalation and Absorption - bath - Lavender and Roman Chamomile (relaxing and sleep inducing) Inhalation - a drop on a tissue or pillow - as above.
For babies and for small children - use only a quarter of the recommended dose for adults. It is preferable to pre-mix the essential oils with a carrier oil- 2 drops of essential oil to 10mls carrier oil.

That's fine, Gypsy. For backache you could use a warming oil such as black pepper or ginger as well or instead.

ASSIGNMENT ONE1. What is an Essential oil? Write a definition in a short sentence. An Essential Oil is a highly concentrated, volatile and potent liquid extract containing the individual chemical make up (the 'essence') of a plant. 2. Who was Rene Gattefosse and what did he do that is significant in modern Aromatherapy?Dr Rene Gattefosse was a French chemist who famously mistakenly applied Lavender oil, thinking it water, to sooth his arm after burning it in an accident. It was this accidental discovery that led to a resurgence in interest in the medicinal uses of Essential Oils. Gattefosse is accredited with inventing the term "aromatherapy". 3. Write a short description of one method of extracting the Essential Oil from plant material.TO FOLLOW ASAP.... sorry, can't find my work sheet!!!!! 4. What factors would you take into consideration when choosing a supplier to buy Essential Oils from?Essential oils need to be pure, unaltered and natural to obtain safe and accurate results. Therefore it is important to consider the following: - Growing conditions - were these suitable to receive the best produce from the plant
- Plant variety - is the specific variety suitable for intended use
- Extraction method - how effective is it and preferably not done by solvent extraction
- Blended Oils - be aware of whether you are buying pure or blended oils. Some blended oils are acceptable however it is important to know if an oil is blended before use.
- Adulterated and Synthetic oils - pure essential oils must not be polluted with impure ingredients or 'watered down' with cheaper or man made oils.
- Does the supplier sell oils in brown glass bottles - these are best for storing the oils.
- Moral Considerations - is the oil organic and is it Fair Trade.
- Prices - Pay attention to prices of oils as this can be a tell tale of the quality and purity.
