Was anyone in the South West NOT affected? I heard Toulouse and Bordeaux airports were closed, amongst others, no trains, phones or electricity for hundreds of thousands. Top wind speed here (Lot and Garonne) 120 km/hr. Now at least I can nod wisely when people talk about the bad storm of 99 ... Minimal damage here, tiles and guttering mostly. Garden/fields have debris everywhere. Still, at least now I know which are my weak fence posts. Turned the horses out just now after 36 hour enforced keep-in. Just off to give them their dinner but interested in anyone else's experiences ... just as soon as you get your electricity back, that is. xxx

We didn't have it too bad , some wind of around 90kph and enough rain to fill the major storm drains . Electricity was only out for a couple of hours . Interestingly - and I think something to do with global warming and wind speeds , the maximum wind at Merignac airport was measured in 99 at 160kph . This time it reached 172kph . A genuine hurricane named Klaus .

Hi Ted and Marianne, Well, we had some 'orrible gusts yesterday morning and the horses decided they didn't want to leave the barn - don't blame them! After yesterday's self-inflicted restriction they went over to the other field this am like a pair of delinquent racehorses, chased each other round the field for two minutes, had one round of a boxing match then got down to the serious business of 'find the blade of grass'.... ;D Our electricity was intermittent for a few hours yesterday but fully back on by 2pm - well done EDF, I'm impressed. It was back on just as Chris had finished setting up the generator - typical! No structural damage at all as far as I can see. Glad to hear you're both OK.

I've been thinking of those of you who are in the SW. Anyone heard of Wendyihts? We still have no news of my mother's cousin who lives in Biscarosse which was badly hit. Waiting for communications and electricity to come back to normal.

well I may have electricity back (with 9-10 mini power cuts/day) but the phone's on - and as a result internet - for only about one hour per day I was able to speak to Wendy briefly yesterday, between my dodgy phone line and her with NO phone or electric :-) She and the horses are ok, she's got some funny stories which I'll let her tell as and when she's able to get back here ;D

OMG! You are not kidding! We chose that Saturday morning to fly from Gatwick into Toulouse - obvioulsy booked way before any incling of the storm to come in fact we didn't know about it untill we were in the air Our Pilot attempted to land at Toulouse on Sat morning but had to abort the landing as the conditions were way beyond the capability of the plane to cope with (Pilot's words not mine - eek!)and fly on to Montpellier - which wasn't much better! I have never been so terrified in my life whilst flying, the turbulence was extreme. We picked up a rented car at Montpellier for a nerve racking drive to the house - in the Gers which took for ever and was quite dangerous. Needless to say once we eventually got to the house, like millions of others across the region, we had no electricity or telephones and very intermittant mobile reception. Quite an adventure! Glad you are all safe and well.
