Ok, i`m debating leaving my "Oss" out tonight. I do have a stable and can bring in if i want to, but i have a Welsh D x Highland, who will be rugged up in his new "Shires" Highlander rug thats just turned up (200gm fill) Plenty of hay out in the field, and will i break the ice tonight, and will be up there to break it again in the morning and will have a good feed tonight. There isn`t really any shelter, natural or otherwise (OH on with designs for one) am i too soft for worrying about leaving him out ? ? Answers on a postcard to the usual address

If its not going to be windy and rainy, he should be absolutely fine and dandy. ;D

If no shelter I would bring in. Mine have a row of trees but I still bring them in so that I know they have access to water x

He'll be fine outside as long as there's no wind or rain. Mine don't go near their shelter when it's cold and dry. Only thing is, is he used to being out or has he been stabled at night so far - it's a bit too cold to leave him out if it would be his first night out for a while.

He`s been out up until last night ... and he was a mardi bolshy "so and so" this morning lol .... !! I`m having problems with leading him, very strong, pushy and has tanked off on a couple of occasions (have Garry RA coming out on monday) and trying to handle him firmly with the ice is prooving a nightmare, we both nearly fell on the ice this morning. Gawd ... why do we do it to ourselves lol !! If it was howling winds and rain he`d def be in ..... mmmmmm !!

my lot are out - they have nice full tum of hay & feed & a drink and they're off away picking at the grass & hedges when I go up in the morning to check them. I don't think they really care too much about the cold, it's the rain my lot hate

In that case, leave him out Just make sure he has plenty of hay to keep him happy.

If he's used to being out then I too would leave him out as long as he's got ad lib hay to eat etc. As others have said, it is the driving wind and rain which tends to really cause problems.

He's young and fit - he can keep warm by moving around if he's outside. I think he'll be absolutely fine, and it sounds like it'll be much safer than trying to move him around.

My foal is in as I like to bring them in for their first winter only to get extra feed and handling. Section A, Thoroughbred/Welsh/Quarter horse and 21 year old Arab are out without rugs but ad lib haylage. The Arab has access to her stable next door to the foal but stands outside all night instead.

I would bring in if no shelter, my field has no shelter I left the girls out for a couple of nights and they were really mardy with me in the evenings when I hayed them, I brought them in last night, tonight they have been waiting for me at the gate since nightfall and didn't move to even walk to the hay when it was put out sometimes I think they can stay out but if it were their choice would they really want to?

i have made the decision to keep seren out because it's an ice rink getting her to and from the field and I'd rather her rough it out than risk her falling coming in
I was worried she'd fret and want to come in so waited while she ate her short feed and made sure she was tucking into her hay before I left. Popped back a bit later to give her more water and check she wasn't fretting.. she came over to the water bucket, checked out the intriguing football I've added to try and keep it drinkable, took a slurp, looked at me as if to say, you've done your bit you can go now, and went straight back to her hay and tucked straight back in again.
and she was toasting under her rugs. Loads of tree and hedge shelter in her field as well. It's the lesser of the evils to me
Seren isn't exactly a sensible person and she definiteoly can't be relied on to walk sensibly on the ice all the time, but even when she walked out perfectly this morning she nearly fell about 4 times so I decided that enough was enough.

I think with storms "moments" that leading across anything icy could be lethal! If he decided to go and pulled you over Daisy that would seriously sting!!!
