Freezing here in Ireland. Almost zero here at 6.30pm. I understand it's due to be a record low in the UK. Thick rugs and beds ahoy.

Mine are out and 3 are nekkid. They do have big shelters bedded with straw and lots of hay so I'm sure they'll be fine. At least there's not much wind

Zephie is slightly less hardy however so I've popped her HW rug on and chucked out enough hay to feed 12 ponies!

Well mine are in their cozy beds with extra hay, but still no rugs. Even Darcy ( TB ) has grown a coat to die for, and seems perfectly happy even though her water buckets froze the day before yeasterday. The guide that I use is if their beds are churned up, .they are cold------------so far, perfectly normal, I sometimes think that a rug flattening a big natural coat, spoils their insulation--------------Interesting. I'll see how they are at late check.

brrr!
both mine are out! Lottie is still nekkid (and like a woolly mammoth) with a pile of hay the size of her. Jack has a hw rug on as he has a bib clip and is a bit woosy. They both have a field shelter with huge beds in.
I have actually been surprised by how warm jack has been this year, during the days i have had to be putting lw/mw rug on as hes been too hot! He wears a shires fleece rug bib, and that extra layer seems to make all the difference

Mine our out but the would be as its only -6 tonight and they are two of of the most hairy Icelandics in this country as far as I can tell-due to an upbringing in Ireland not Iceland!
Its its frosty they go white on the outside where none of the cold penatrateds their coats and I can find little horse shaped green bit in the field where they have laid down-flat out
They still need more attention-will be up breaking water at 7am and they get the treat of some 'Devon Haylage' in the mornings-its a treat due to the cost!
stilll have grass as well enough till mid feb

Well, William the Shetland is still in flip flops and bermuda shorts he's so tough below freezing temperatures are nothing! He is enjoying the extra food though! ;D I used to live up the Dee Valley, about 20 miles inland from Aberdeen, and one of my neighbours bred Shetlands. Their insulation was so good, that I'd drive past on a snowy morning, and they'd have a layer of snow three or four inches thick on their backs - and, unless they rolled, it would stay there until the thaw, because there wasn't enough warmth leaking out from their bodies to melt it. Now that's what I call a winter coat! Best regards, Jack

i'm going to ask my YO if baby ned can stay out 24/7 until this cold snap has passed. the footing to and from the field is absolutely treacherous and she'll go mental stabled 24/7 for that length of time.
I have no concerns about her staying out, she's young and healthy and the field is nicely sheltered. I do hope the YO agrees but she doesn't do all year 24/7 grazing. but I can ask and see if she will make an exception as I'm the only person on the yard at the moment. She's pretty amenable and at the moment it's Serens safety and well being that's at the forefront of my mind and not my inconvenience etc. if that makes sense
