I left the ponies in this morning because it had snowed a bit here, but I knew there was ice lurking, as I'd skidded into the main road on my way up there. Luckily 3 cars just managed to avoid hitting me.
As it thawed, I turned them out at 1.30 this afternoon. My sister called me to say Major had slipped when she brought them in tonight. Apparently all four legs went from under him and he landed on his side but immediately got up. He didn't seem to be in any discomfort but obviously it's hard to tell immediately.
I'll check him thoroughly in the morning and they'll probably be staying in again, given the forecast, but what specifically would you guys worry about?

The hips are pretty vulnerable in a fall like that. Fingers crossed for you,

Thanks you two, I'm hoping that his little bit of extra padding will have protected his bones. He's not grossly overweight or anything but he is like a little mammoth at the moment, despite being rugged.

I'm sure he will be fine...fingers crossed for you both. As well as his hip I'd double check his shoulder. The Chiro we visited a few weeks ago told the story of an expensive horse who did the splits on his front legs (legs splayed out to the sides)...took a few weeks to get him right so going down on his side may have been lucky in these icy conditions.

Like everyone else I'd check his pelvis area and shoulders and neck CD. I'm sure he will be absolutely though. It really is treacherous isn't it. Not looking forward to this morning as will be worse today I reckon...

Oh poor Munchkin. I hope he is fine this morning and not suffering any ill effects of his Skating on Ice ! I put loads of salt down on the yard this morning ( after i forgot that emptying the waterbuckets on the front was Not my best idea ! ) The salt had no affect on it at all. Let us know when you can how he is ? x

Thank you for your good wishes everyone, he must have been reading this, because he was fine when I arrived this morning, mooching in his stable and impatiently kicking his hay bucket around. I felt him over for any heat spots, then applied a little pressure, poked about a bit, pulled a bit here and there and he just carried on eating his hay throughout. He doesn't even like being groomed (suits me, I hate grooming ) so I know he'd have been having a word if he was a bit hurty. Of course, it was too icy to walk him out but I'm confident that there was no harm done. I may put them out this afternoon as it's lovely and sunny again. The other livery is going to ring me later to update on conditions at the yard. I don't want him to stiffen up. I've found that salt worked well outside their stables Lorraine, this morning I could still see where I'd laid it yesterday afternoon and put more down for later. Unfortunately he slipped on the bottom yard which is usually OK because it's fairly sheltered. It's horribly deceptive this weather. Think I'll carry him in and out of the stables later! ;D MTA Mandal, that sounds scary and we were grateful that he hadn't landed on his knees or hocks. It probably is the best landing all things considered.
