It is a bit sad tho, cause I know a lady who thinks that her road worked pone should be shod, but she seems ok without.....but people will just belive, as some folks "research" only goes as far as reading a horse mag.....if that!

Well, I was really shocked to read this. Mainly because Huw is my vet!!!
Huw is my regular vet of choice from Liphook, and he is fab. I can't fault him. He really is excellent.
It's a really odd thing for him to say tho, as not only is he my vet, but all my horses are barefoot! And he always says how well their feet look. Currently nothing is in work (my mare has been having a foal), but she has always been unshod when she was in work - as has my pony mare, my old mare (now retired) etc etc.
Even more than that, I have always found Huw a really openminded vet, and am surprised he would say such a thing.
I shan't be seeing him again until early March, but when I do, you can be sure I shall raise this with him!!!

well I would love to hear what he has to say varkie . I know sometimes things can be edited etc to become ambigous or unclear but the statement seemed quite clear and i ncontext of the paragraph. He did say that many horses do manage brefoot but qualified it to disciplines like western horses for some reason and horses that do a lot of work on the softer surfaces. Some readers of these magazines do take them as their main source of advice as there are loads articles on nutrition, health etc .... and articles form some apparently well respected experts in their fields. A horses feet and their health are such an essential part of EVERY horse .... and its not like a showjumping or dressage masterclass in the mag where you can play around with it a bit or even ignore it if its not your cup of tea. ............ and a vet giving readers advice ( and I agree with so much he says about vetting etc ) should really think very carefully about what he says . Even if it is his opinion horse should be shod at that stage he has not respected contrary evidence or even advised people to explore other options. well, we will see what transpires
