May I ask you lot if it's true that a stallion gelded later is more likely to maintain stallion behaviours??? It makes sense to me as I suppose his behaviours will be more entrenched but does the loss of hormones negate this??

I had my Arab stallion gelded at 13 years old, as I didnt want to use him to cover and wanted him to have a happy life with other horses, which, at 22, he has!! We gave him about nine months before introducing other horses into the same field with him and he has now lived with his little herd of three geldings and one mare, since!- and not even any trouble with the mare, she fancied my other Arab more!

I think it depends on the individual Mandal. Some will totally loose all/most of their stallion behaviours, and become safe to turnout in mixed company even. Others will retain some/all of their stallion behaviours, and their handling/lifestyle has to be tailored accordingly.
Of the entires I have cut in the last year, two were instantly (almost - once op healed) safe to turn out even with mares. Of the other two, one was sold to a gelding only home - they were aware of his past, but he was instantly safe with geldings, even in 'covering' season. I think he would be fine with mares in the future. The other, I still own, and he has been living out with my stallion & other colts this winter. He shows no interest in the mares in the field over the way tho, so I intend to try turning him out with some mares next year sometime. He does appear to have lost all his stallion behaviours.

Do riding schools really not do stable management lessons? I remember having lessons at hayside stables newark and everytime in was raining to hard you had stable management lessons instead

Thanks Heather and Varkie. I suspected it may well be an individual thing.
