Wait to spring to decide what to do. I would seriously think about the loan with view to buy.

Good decision, well done. I know you only want what's best for Ryan. Good luck in finding the perfect loan home.

A wise decision Sophie and make sure you get a water tight loan contract, just in case someone tries to pull a fast one! I'm sure people could suggest some variations on a standard one, if you put a thread up. Better safe than sorry with some folk.
Good luck!

I thought diane had liz'sold horse. I get lost who owns who lol.
Glad to hear your loaning him, if you selling nothing is concrete, peoples circumstances could easily change forcing them to sell

It's probably best to PM Liz about that, as I don't think she wants to bandy her private life in public unfortunately!

Thanks guys, just to add to the Ryan saga... after careful consideration and walking round testing the school yesterday i put Ryan loose in the school, he cantered down it once, found the only patch of shade where the school was still frosty, slipped over and skidded about 5 metres on his side into a pile of jumps. hes grazed all his side and is really stiff on one hind leg. just my luck! i do feel really bad tho, i honestly thought the school was OK.

My friend went through this last year with her mare and I know what a hard decision it is to make. Her mare was initially miss diagnosed with shivers. She didn't show any significant signs of discomfort when ridden or mounted, but wasn't right so she was taken to the vets for assessment which showed she was lame on all four legs and didn't really know where her feet were, probably why she was more prone to fall over more than the usual horse , the x-rays of her back showed kissing spine affecting about 12 of her vertebae. The vet did say she could bute and ride her as she wasn't showing any adverse reaction to manipulation of her back but we felt that this wouldn't be fair considering the extent of the kissing spine. Injections were out of the question too many vertebae were affected. The vet also said that some horse can cope a lot better than others and that some horses with very mild kissing spine will not permit a ridder on their backs while others with quite extensive kissing spine will cope quite well, however I'm sure jumping was out of the question. In the end my friend came to the conclusion that it would be best to put her mare to sleep after the summer, as she couldn't sell her and didn't want to give her away to a stranger. Infact one of the charities she contacted said they had just had to deal with a welfare case where a horse with navicular had been rehomed as a companion and then sold on as a ridding horse which caused the horse untold suffering and that they strongly advised againt rehoming and ITO if she didn't have the money and facilities to retire her them they advised she have her mare PTS. After much heart searching D day was set but there was a a last minute reprieve as a friend of her instructors was looking for a companion for her elderly mare who had just lost her buddy, I just hope this is the fair tale ending for my friends mare and that she will have a few years of happy retirement and I don't envy anyone having to make a desicion like that, after all we all want what best and the kindest for the horse at the end of the day!
