if they haven't been clipped? They are all well covered but I'm a bit worried my dales cross who is about seventeen now might be a bit cold as his stable is messy, it's not normally. So I'm thinking he might be moving about in there to keep warm. Am a being a worry guts

I Think we all are worry worts! Rio is in an american barn type set up, 3 of the boys in there are not clipped and a variety of breeds one cobby, one fell and one generic TB type none of them are wearing rugs over night but my Rio is in a lightweight stable rug, but I'm a worryer too!

To be honest up until yesterday I would have said they would probably be ok, but my Sec D cross who very rarely has a rug on was shivering in her stable yesterday morning. She hates rugs and always pulls faces when I put one on, but last night she seemed grateful! The weather forecasts have been completely out every night I think - for example last night it said minus 2 here, but it was actually minus 6! So, as long as the forecast says below freezing I am going to put a rug on her I think just to be safe, as she must have been shivering most of the night and, although she could do with losing a bit of weight I don't believe that is the way to go about it. It is hard as I didn't want to put a rug on as I didn't want to interfere with her coat, but it just had to be done.

I have always been a firm believer that if a horse starts suddenly making a mess of his bed in cold weather, it's because he IS cold. therefore I would rug him. But once he's rugged at night, he will have to be rugged in a lighter rug in the field in the day when can move about more, or he will not feel the benefit when he is in and standing. None of mine are rugged even though they are TB or near, but I am watching for signs of them being cold------------so far, they are fine.

Zac is a little porky so have tried leaving him unrugged but he has had a lightweight on the past couple of nights as his water in his STABLE has been frozen in the morning!!!
Ori drops condition too quickly so she has been rugged all this month at night when she is in. Both out in 180g rugs with neck covers and unclipped. Zac is fluffy and back in work now so may have to clip him in the new year so he will definitely have a rug on overnight then but will stay in the same turnout to burn a bit of that fat.

To be honest, I woul rather rug in the stable than field!
At least if they are out in field they can move around to keep warm, but they cant in the stable

I agree Sarah, but once they are rugged in the stable you really have to rug in the field unless you are at hand all day to stop a furry pony getting too wet to rug when it comes in.
