Wendy, what is canola oil? I've never seen it here...mind you I probably haven't looked! The flax/olive mix isn't too expensive.....mainly because I sneak the oilive oil into the trolley at Tescos so it comes out of the human food budget
I've been thinking about the gut thing, because as you know JJ also has gut issues...and for the first time he had colic a few weeks back. Generally the initial aggression/stiffness would also involve a gut upset or at least a mildly leaky bottom (sorry! yuk), along with a good bit of cribbing. Now, when he stiffened up yesterday we got cribbing and a bit of a wet dribbly bum...I'd always assumed that the gut upset was the cause of the laminitis too but now I'm beginning to wonder that if the muscle stiffness hits first in his HQs, if it isn't also affecting the muscles in his hindgut and hence his digestion. It's why EPSM horses are more likely to get colic....so I'm wondring if there isn't a link here too. Food remaining in the hindgut for too long is likely to create toxic problems and hence there's a possibility of laminitis, which is perhaps why our EP reckons horses with managed EPSM show foot improvements?
Troop, if I never hear of another metabolic illness in my life I'll be happy!!!!! Richard says there are loads more JJ hasn't managed to get yet, but I REFUSE to find out about them
Jen, I shall indeed give him a kiss on the chops, at least when he's dried out and doesn't smell like a wet dog
Ding bat, I'm sorry to hear about Storm. I suppose really there are so many possible causes of the dreaded L that it's impossible to trace them all, and when you think of how Sam's Flirt was, you do kind of realise that we just don't bl00dy well know enough and probably never will. But it doesn't help, does it? Can't you get him on pergolide as a diagnostic, or something like that? It might be worth a go, although our vet wouldn't have any of it (probably rightly as it turns out, but I'm not holding my breath).
Boony, you were *extremely* brave. H was worse behaved than JJ for a change (and totally refused to pick up her foot for me, though she was fine with everyone else!!!!) but even she's growing up and less likely to be a total pain. Fingers crossed that we can actually get JJ massaged and hopefully a bit more comfortable.....
