Mine are micro-chipped, however we did manage to buy a stolen pony who was micro-chipped (now back with original owner) which caused us and the original owner a lot of heartache. Checking for microchips is not a mandatory part of vetting but really it should be. We only discovered this pony was mictochipped when we had the vet out to microchip her. He also said there were different microchips and so a different scanner needed to pick up some types? Has anyone else heard this?
As a consequence of our experiences the vets we use say they will always run a scanner over any new horses they take on and when they do vettings. This ought to be done everywhere for microchipping to really work. Alos, is there not some new law coming out that all horses and ponies have to be microchipped this year sometime? Or is it just foals born from this year onwards?

Freezemarked. One grey (mottled skin so you can't really see it, not that any one would want to steal him anyway), one piebald, one tricolour and two palominos. Definitely an excellent visible detterent.

Really must get mine freezemarked. Will be my new years resolution.... Two of them are chipped though.
Just had a look at the websites though, and it'll cost an arm and a leg!

Im all for freeze marking and feel much safer knowing all ours are done. I know freeze marked horses are still stolen but its often dumped or recovered. I know that the owner of at least one micro chipped horse who was stolen said she wished she had had him freeze marked instead. To do both is probably the best answer, but make sure you clip over your freeze mark in winter so its clear, i always paint it on the rug if they wear one along with the postcode and house number.
As for showing the horse i won the midlands coloured championship with several years ago was freeze marked. Most judges are more accepting of freeze marks now.

All the Spanish horses have to be microchipped but there have been problems when the chips have moved or the horse has expanded hugely after being chipped as a foal and the chip can't be located. There have also been instances where chips have been removed from dead horses and put into others so not an infallible method of identification.
