My sisters youngester did the same until we got her in a MB 04 Myler low port comfort snaffle, it has a 3/4 '' port which gives relief for a larger tongue My cob had to go bitless before I discovered the 04 Myler as she would tank through the bit when I made any contact, she loves the 04 and I hope to get her happy schooling in a 02 which is the same without the port which is dressage legal so I can use that for competing www.scallywagsequinesupplies.co.uk/p/category/0709109336-MB+04+Low+Port+Comfort+Snaffle/

My mare sticks her tongue out, always to the right, just as you are describing. Have had saddle, teeth, back checked, and have spoken to bit bank guy who is also dentist. Conclusion, reached through understanding of behaviour as well as physical, is that in her case it is a stress related thing - have done what I can to reduce her stress levels and her tongue sticks out much less now.

I used to ride a racehorse who used to stick his tongue to the side - he used to do it when he was in his stable too and shake his head up and down, i always thought he was just a cheeky chappy though!

The Myler Comfort snaffle with tongue relief or small port are designed for that and they do work.

Message for Sue Brown: what did you do to reduce your horse's stress, I'd be interested to find out, to help with my horse. I treat mine calmly when handled and he has no pressure when lightly schooled, lunged or hacked. Everything is still new to him so can't completely removed pressure. He is good in the stable (though a bit of a fidget!) and a good tempered horse.
