I've just been on a dog forum where there are piccies of dogs dressed up in silly outfits and tinsel, allegedly 'loving' it. I went with the crowd in my youth and tinselled up my horse but have since thought that it's a bit demeaning for a majestic animal that is beautiful in itself and doesn't need tarting up. What do you think about dressing up horses during the festive time.

I see it as a bit of fun really. Nothing wrong with someone putting a little tinsel on their horses bridle etc, but i am talking tasteful not OTT! lol.
Its not something i do personally, but have seen many others that do.
Its one of those things, each to their own really.
Now you wouldn't catch me putting my dog in a dog design hoddie or the like!

If the horses aren't offended, then I can't see the problem. I don't think horses think in terms of demeaning or not.

Have done it for a laugh a few times around xmas time, horses don't seem bothered by it and i wear tinsel as well so look just as daft as they do The one year I only tinseled my hat and not the horse because I was riding a bit of a silly drama queen and didn't want to chance it the horsie was fascinated by my tinsel and spent ages snuffling around my hat.

well I wrapped a bit round Taz's neck and a bit round me so we were equally demeaned I am not into the over the top doggie dressing up outfits ........ or some of the horse stuff either TBH ........ dont think either speicies "love it" ... the attention yes .......... but neither do they fell demeaned .. uncomfortable perhaps physically at the feel or if it gets in the way of normal movement. dont see the harm in us spreading a little xmas cheer ... after all a tree is also beautiful without all the lights and glitter ........ but just once a year a little decoration is Ok by me . ( I ama tree hugger see )

I didn't like the fancy dress stuff but now I admire the fact that it can be done. This is as far as Malaga would allow but he took it with grace and I couldn't've asked him to do it last year. (and he reckoned the tinsle tasted interesting too! ;D)

Well I've recently posted a picture of us tinselled up for a ride to the pub on 22nd December. I didn't actually put any tinsel on her bridle, in case it irritated her. I sewed it all round the edge of my saddle pad, and wound it round my stirrup irons, and then some round my hat. So technically it wasn't actually on my horse! We got so many waves and nice comments from people that I think it cheered them all up, and I can't see how it was demeaning for our horses. I think people do things with horses that are far more demeaning, considering some of the clips I have seen on You Tube.

yrs ago when I had my first horse myself and others from the yard would go on a tinsel ride round the village and to the local disabled childrens home. Children loved it and I think the horses did not mind they were very tinsled and over decorated.

For me, it's just a bit of Festive, feel good fun, Boxing Day Meet was always awash with tinsel and glitter, even the Hunt Horses used to get the treatment.
I don't believe that horses have that image of themselves, therefore, as long as they are comfy they don't care, look at what they put up with wearing the rest of the time without complaining, rugs, tack, boots, boots on feet....now THAT must feel strange to them.
It is only us humans who rationalise what is demeaning I think. Each to their own and all that. I don't do diamente browbands and bling myself, but couldn't actually care less if that's what other people want to do, not my business.
Dogs, on the other hand, do sometimes look downright uncomfortable/embarrassed at wearing costumes. On the other hand, you get your extrovert dogs who seem to enjoy being 'special'.... I think dogs have a different view of 'personal self' than horses do. One of my dogs would be horrified and would hide, the other would bound about getting very excited.

Ditto Lolamae. My favourite colour is pink, so my gelding is constantly made to wear pink coloured things (rugs, bridles, numnahs, boots, bridles - this list is somewhate endless!) and I have recently discovered my love of all things diamante and bling People laugh, as they all joke about he's the most effeminate horse they've seen & in fact, one lady in all seriousness said I was "cruel" ... I really don't think my horse gives a stuff about what colour his turn out rug is or his brushing boots. It's a bit of fun on my part (and I think he looks mighty fine in pink!) ... I would be much crueler if he didn't have daily attention, constant access to fresh water, ad-lib forage either in the form of grass or hay & handled him in a way that brought him pain, fear or misunderstanding. And yes, he did wear pink tinsel Xmas eve!
