Do I struggle? Yes. He goes from almost perfectly sound to thumping digital pulses in hours. The current culprit is I think the current bale of hay, which though soaked to within an inch of its life, is just too sugary (11%). I double soaked half of it in lots of water tonight but it transpired that Rohan had been feeding him the single soaked stuff by mistake so he was marginally worse by evening. Admittedly worse is just a bit stiff in the HQs with more of a pulse than I'd like, but it doesn't take much to make him critical. ANd of course the bl00dy "oat" chaff which was nothing of the sort has made things much, much worse I'm hoping that if we can get him onto something like the Marksway Timothy haylage, which is very very low sugar, he might stay stable--I only got the hay analysis back just before Christmas and was absolutely horrified that it was still 8% sugars even after a 24 hour double soak. That's far too high for JJ. But obviously it's practically impossible to order in anything over Crimbo and New Year, so we're just having to muddle along with a mix of unsuitable hay and staw chaff. Unfortunately he's losing weight at an alarming rate on that regime If the haylage and straw plan doesn't work, I'm out of ideas. H would love to poison him. If she could she'd have a palomino voodoo doll with pins in it, but she seems to make do by pulling faces at him when he's not looking. Unfortunately for her he is actually still fairly sprightly and can still launch into a 50mph gallop to chase her off the hay, so even though he's not 100% sound he's doing OK and the general trend is improvement. I don't think I'll ever take a feed on face value ever again though. Took the unopened bags back to the feed merchants and they were actually a bit snotty about it! So I won't be going there again
