Evidently my son has inherited my self-preservation gene (ie, complete lack of).
Take one QH, now almost 100% sound on a soft surface, who has a tendency to hoon and buck and hasn't been ridden for 9 months. Add one boy who hasn't ridden for nine months either, and certainly has never ridden bareback....or without a bridle...... you can probably guess the rest.
Apparently, as I was told by one very excited boy this evening, he couldn't find the keys so when he went down to do the evening feed he had to climb over the gate. JJ refused to get out of the way so Rohan threw a leg over him, which normally makes him scarper. JJ however just stood there....so Rohan scrambled on board....onto a soggy wet rug in the dark, no bridle or headcollar, and asked him to turn round and head towards the feedroom. This is probably very much what JJ was intending anyway--'Get the daft human on board and cart him off to the kitchen, it'll be quicker than letting him walk' so apparently the short trip across the paddock was uneventful, even with a pony hooning around, rain, wind, no hat, and the fact that riding bareback is a bit wierd because the entire horse apparently goes in odd directions and you have to hang on to the rug at first.
I suppose I should be horrified, but actually, JJ (for all the fact he's a bit of a handful) probably is the sort of horse you can do that on and think it's really perfectly normal. And, of course, when we were riding him he was always very very fidgety to mount, so I suppose he's probably far more comfortable now than he was a year ago, which can only be a good thing
