Ok,for those of you that like a balanced discussion, this thread is for everybody to say what they dont like about parelli! Personally I dont like the rigidity, the lack of 'soul', the way many people use it without thought and turn their horses into automatons. I also dont like the riding aspect, the aiding is ok for hacking/pootling around imo,but the current thinking on seat/feel/position seems way off the mark to me. And of course as for the media hype etc...well! Lets see if all the people who advocate parelli can be as well behaved on this thread as those who dont like it have been on the other....that will be very telling methinks So come on,opinions please!

First and foremost ... Riding in Fluidity. Secondly ... the fitting of the saddle Both of these are a recipe for sore backs (horse and rider). I also don't like: Horsenality (it's fun to read but like horoscopes has no real meaning) especially btting according to Horsenality Increase in pressure (if they don't understand ask in a different way not LOUDER) The rigidity of the system and the way that it's frowned on (to put it mildly) to research other methods The 'one size fits all' training (it doesn't, horses are individuals and should be treated as such) The lack of praise and reward. Even on the Parelli programmes there is very little done to say to the horse 'that's good' or 'well tried'. The horses would learn MUCH quicker if they knew what they were trying to achieve I'll leave it there and shut up

I'm a Parelli fan, but I'm game I don't like the whole marketing hype. I don't like the way Parelli is so anti certain areas of riding. I believe there are very good and very bad examples to be found in all areas (and that goes for Parelli as well). I don't like the way people follow the levels to the letter and end up drilling their horses and utterly boring them. I think it sometimes gives people the false idea that they can handle their problem horse just by following the programme. I had such a horse and had the sense to call in the experts to help out, but there are lots that don't and then end up in real difficulties. I love the early ridden aspects of Parelli, but am not a fan of the later whole 'collection' part.

i dont like that it is often used as a disipline in itself rather than to enhance training in other disiplines. i dont see the point!
i like it on a whle but then ive never owned a pack i have just been to demos and seen it practically.

Riding in Fluidity I don't get at all (what's fluid about bracing against a tense, bracing horse?) The cost of all the kit - A stick, a rope and a halter for about £80? I recently bought a rope halter (£8.50) and 12 ft line (£15) from this Ebay seller stores.ebay.co.uk/cornish-led-s and they're great quality - presumably she's making a reasonable profit so that just goes to show what a rip off "genuine" Parelli stuff is IMO. The training packs themselves - I have a Level 1 video box set I bought off ebay a few years ago for quite a lot of money, and it's really quite poor - the first video is OK, the second just a "look how fab Parelli is" vid, there's an audio cassette tape (gee) which I've never listened too and a load of little booklets. I was expecting rather more. Cost to make, I would guess £20 max; sale price new I think was over £100. I have no problem with people making a profit, but this is a bit extreme, and taking advantage of people who are trying to do their best for their horses by exploiting them with this rubbish is pretty reprehensible IMO.

Why, Sarah??? Have all these things not been said before? Or do you just like winding people up, by any chance?
There are things that I don't agree with about Parelli, but I'm not going to list them here. The main things that I don't like are the fact that people really think that it's a "one size fits all" program. It's so tailored to the individual horse if you actually choose to look beyond the cowboy hat....

LOL!!
But you see chappies, thats why I put the two threads up,one each! The idea is to try and get a balanced viewpoint of good versus bad rather than the slanging matches that usually ensue, that way I feel its much clearer for anybody interested what there is to be gained and what is to be avoided. Everybody is doing really well too, cokey is halfway to the norty tree I think, but pretty restrained so far....

I don't like any method that encourages the participant to exclude all other methods.... and suggests the particpant might be burnt at the stake if they consider following a different mentor. I've not idea if parelli does this - but some Parelli-ites I have met seem very rigid in the way in which they deal with their horses

I feel like I'm being conned when I watch Pat because he's cheese on toast! Like I said on the thread, I get that feeling about some other cowboy types as well.

My biggest bug bear is the heavy clips on the ropes - and the way they whack them about the horses chin and face (as seen by LP on H&Ctv).
I make my own ropes ( I love rope halters and long ropes) with a normal headcollar clip on and that is all I need, and all my horses need.
I DO have a carrot stick - it makes a great clicker training target....but an expensive one...
When I had real problems with my 2yo years ago, he did get trained with some parelli stuff - very basic, and that was combined with IH methods and other - with the very very wonderful RA Sue Brown. But it was the IH methods that worked best with him, and latterly the clicker training. If I rode with flopidity on him I'd be black and blue from falling off - he responds to the slightest movement of my seatbones....and I like that....
