Thanks Sue! thats why its always good to have a credit card! I'd have to do more work to pay it off! I find myself just forgetting about it as much as possible as it is very much a waiting game shes on stud balancer, is a good doer looks great and I'm so far succeding in stopping myself throwing the hay bale and other goodies at her!

Let her have as much hay as she wants. The growing foal reduces the amount of gut space available, it is very hard for an in-foal mare to overeat on forage.

Please stop scaring me! I have up to 8 foals due next year, and am always terrified of the complications! When they're born, I stand watching and feel so nervous!!!

Varkie, I'd be flaming terrified if I had 8 foals due in one year. It's a perfectly reasonable state to be in. Start paying off your credit card now.

Yes, one of mine was AI'd with fresh semen at stud, the stallion was so valuable that they wouldn't risk him with natural coverings - but then my other mare wouldn't take, so she did get a natural covering in the end. They said they were really well mannered mares, I'm sure to this day they mistook someone else's mares for mine.....

My mare had both big e but took to the AI as she just wouldn't flipping stand at her most receptive!! I drove on my birthday a round trip of 3.5hours to collect fresh semen and return with it to meet vet and get it inseminated! She does have unlimited forage Sue but a few friends who have breed in the past are mortified at her 1 scoop HiFi lite and 2 cups stud balancer but she honestly does look really well and I don't want her to get porky yet as shes going to be as wide as a bus being short coupled.. poor you varkie have you got sedatives to hand??!

Well, if I'm lucky it'll be less than 8! One of them tested positive using the Wee Foal test - we've only had her a short time, and she was bought unhandled from a sale, so too nervy to test any other way. I'm hoping that one is wrong! Plus, two of my mares haven't tested in foal, they just failed to return in season twice, so they might not be. In addition, two of my mares who originally scanned in foal just aren't looking fat enough, so may not be. Scanning of my mares is difficult, so not easy just to rescan now - we'll be waiting a couple of months to see how fat they get, and failing that, will rescan externally when their summer coats start to come through!
So might be as few as 3 foals. But I do hope not! Tho shall be a nervous wreck in April - have 4 supposedly due!
*gulp*

Varkie, I'd be flaming terrified if I had 8 foals due in one year. How would you be if you were ME then? I've got 14 of my own due (scanned and correct) and so far 4 visiting mares booked in for foaling (and they're even MORE worrying than your own!) Last season we had 10 - and ended up with 10 live foals and 10 healthy mares (same as year before) so my luck has got to change at some stage and I'm not sure if I'll be able to bear it! I lost a foal 5 years ago and it still upsets me to think about it (he was a red bag delivery at 290 days so never stood a cat in hell's chance!)

I do sympathise with you Janet. I had a red bag delivery many years ago. The foal was nearly 4 weeks late, I was there and punctured the bag and saved the foal, BUT the mare died the following year a month or two before foaling------------vets said there was a connection. On the feeding front, Darcy who is a 15.3 hh TB, is not due until the first week in May and is still only getting grass, hay ad lib, Alfa A, literally 1/2 lb of pasture mix in each feed ( to encourage her to eat up) and Formula4 Feet, which is really working-----------she came back with appauling feet. She looks brilliant, and will not go on stud mix or Balancer until February. What balancer does everyone use, if they don't feed stud mix out of interest.

Mine stay on virtually the same as yours SS3, until the same time! Then they either get sure-grow or build up mix, depending on what seems right at the time. Mine don't do very well on stud mix, but seem to thrive on build up.

Thanks Sue, as Darcy is maiden and a fussy feeder, unlike her mum and Birdie who scoffed D&H stud mix for England, I am a bit worried about her, especially as I have to determine her diet before I go away on Feb 7th. She ADORES pasture mix, so if stud mix turns out to be a no no, can I feed something like Suregrow with a bit of Pasture Mix.
