i have a well bred id/tb, quite a chunky girl and i'm thinking about breeding from her next year. What kind of stallion should i be looking for? A pure bred tb, a pure breed ID or a sportshorse? Also as she is grey is there any colour i can cross her with that the foal will not end up grey?

Before you embark on sending her to stud ( having confirmed to yourself that you have the facilities and finances to care for a brood mare and in effect take on another horse,) first decide what type of horse best suits what you will want to do with it, and what sort of horse would be most suitable for you to sell as well as possible, should the need ever arise. With that picture in mind, then use a stallion that conformationally improves your mare's faults, has a fantastic temperament, preferably has some kind of proven performance record, and who you think will, when crossed with your mare, produce the pattern you have designed. That's what I try to do.

well its kinda by chance if the foal turns out grey or not. but for a good horse i would probably breed him with a sporthorse. good allrounder

well i like everything about her, she looks more drafty, has a lovely nature and is very easy. To ride she is strong and silly (tb brain probably) so ideally i would like to dilute the tb in her for more Irish Draft One of my friends had to have her 6 month pregnant mare pts yesterday due to colic, so i am aware it could all go very wrong.

They don't always end up grey, it depends on if the parents are carrying one or two of the grey factor alleles. We occassionally get bay foals from 2 grey Lusos, because neither parent is homozygous for the grey factor. Unfortunately, the colour testing labs can't do grey at the moment. Make sure you really it cost it out before you start, breeding foals is the same as owning horses, only worse - just like burning money.
Also bear in mind that around 10% of all neonates (1st year of life) in *all* horse breeds die. You could lose your mare, foal or both. Breeding, as SS3 will surely agree, is wonderful, exciting and life-enhancing, but can also be tragic and deeply upsetting.

You may not want a heavier type ( could you post a photo?) so perhaps she should go to another TBx ID or Tb with an amazing temperament-------------there are lots about you know. What height is she and what height are you hoping for ------------remember, you are trying to breed what YOU want to ride, not just a foal. Iam so sorry to her about your friend's mare, losing a mare in foal is the saddest thing of all to me, but remember, being in foal was unlikely to be the cause of her colic.

I don't think I can ever breed again it was so stressful and foals are harder work than babies - I know, I've had 4 (babies!) and mine was all relatively straightforward! I used a gorgeous ID stallion on my ID x TB mare and I am delighted with the result

i am looking into it with open eyes and trying to cost it all up. The mare is 12 so would be 13 1/2 for her first foal which i believe is getting a bit past it and thats if she were to get pregnant straight away. I have been looking at stallions, i love this one; www.stallionsatstud.co.uk/DisplayAdvertDetails.asp?AC=000000250but a tb/id x Andalusion He is lovely though and another grey What does main stb mean on a pedigree?

big e, to be able to say which stallion would suit your mare, we REALLY need to see your mare, and I sincerely hope that 13 yrs old is not "past it" as that is the age Darcy will be when she has her first foal ( God willing) in May having done a job under saddle first.
