Sadly they breed by default, just leave the colts and mares and fillies on the hills together, it's probably more trouble and expense to get the colts in and gelded than just to leave them. I suppose the only answer is like with feral cats, some form of birth control, but that takes time and effort. Answers on a postcard please. Were TS and RSPCA there this time?

truly awful and even if they are bought by the public at this prie they will probably fal into the hands of novice owners who could get one cheap and then will lead a life of misery for that price i could stop smoking and buy two ponies a day instead it is terrible

absolutely iwillbuy, pocket money prices!! it sickens me that a little baby animal can be vended for that price to face G*d only knows what with no safeguards, no provision for its' welfare, nothing! so much for the wonderful all singing all dancing 2006 welfare act, seems to me it's only good for one thing, providing a source of ink on paper!! Angry? you damn well bet I am. 10 years ago EMW ran our ride 5 for a foal campaign, named so because of the hundreds of £5-00 foals vended through auctions, since then most things have increased in rpice but not, so it seems, the auction price of little vulnerable pony foals! time to take action. emw xx

its awful when i went to holmfirth the other week hardly anything sold which means the poor little souls would of been dragged around each market some of them were still trying to suckle on other foals i also noticed more larger ridden horses there which probably means there is more people buying horses but not being able to afford the upkeep it is truly heartbreaking

Poor little ponies - each worth less than a hamster in the eyes of the vendors Just ridiculous that they don't realise what they're doing and introduce some sort of wild breeding programme like they have done with the New Forests.

That is the only answer Chloe. Can we start by putting pressure on the regional development boards?

I think this is the point I was trying to make when the French horses were being discussed. I have every admiration for what people did with the French ones but this annually breaks my heart.

Were these actually hill ponies or domesticated breeder overstock?

In my experience both, but mostly hill ponies.

Why not lobby the Welsh reps of BHS and ILPH? I know for a fact that they are dedicated people and regularly attend animal welfare groups at the Welsh Assembly where issues like these can be discussed. Huge head away has been made in area such as racing greyhounds and laws are actually being developed around the work of these groups so I know that it can be done!
APGAW and AWAW Assembly based groups are also 2 groups you may be interested in joining if you are an animal welfare organisation.

It really is quite ridiculous and apalling that this is still going on.Surely the farmers will do something about it themselves if they are making a loss though? They cant just leave them on the hills or they risk being prosecuted for neglect,so if the prices dont pick up wont they just sort themselves out???
