I watched it and enjoyed it. Gemma was a star and showed those other two right up, even though Nick did partly make up for it at the end - they were just far far too full of their own importance and were down right rude at times to their hosts.
Agree Susan, its not how I would like things done, but who are we to criticise a way of life, where as the cowboy said "how on earth are they supposed to administer painkillers to every animal when they have 1000s and live in the middle of no-where"
I felt for the horse, but would imagine he had probably forgotton about it once he was out running again - end of the day those horses probably have more natural lives than all of ours, so maybe the downs are made up for by the ups. Plus without the advanced medical care and support we have in this country, surely there are reasons NOT to use drugs etc due to side effects and not having facilities to deal with it.
The stallion whilst obviously in pain when the deed was done, wasn't as outraged or upset as I thought he would be.
Not excusing it, just that its very easy to sit in our western world and look down on other cultures when we do far more insidious cruetly to animals probably.

Hi, I found the castration hard, but they gave there reasons, he was not good enough to breed from, so even though it seemed a harsh way to do it they were being responsable, I bet they have gelded 1000's like that and are using them as riding horses. I would never geld any of mine like that, but it is there way of life and the horse didn't seemed to bothered afterwards.

I watched too and thoroughly enjoyed it. From the start Gemma was, in my opinion, the stronger one of the three. The other two had too much of 'themselves' to get over, especially the barrister, to get on with the job in hand. What struck me, which has been touched on in preious postings, is how cosseted a life we lead here in the priveleged western world and how much we seem to take for granted. These cowboys have been leading this traditional albeit hard way of life for generations with little return. They don't see their families for months on end and live frugely (sp?) on the hoof! Their horses are their means to do a job, not leisure horses, which most of ours are. They don't have the luxury of basic medication let alone expensive anesthetic drugs for their day to day routines. I did find the castration scene quite disturbing, as did many of us, but seeing the horse up and quiet fairly soon afterwards (notwithstanding TV editing!) was reassuring and the scene where Gemma was face to face with the horse in apologetic communication was very touching. I thought, overall, the programme portrayed a very balanced veiw of the differences in lifestyles of the women and the cowboys and showed a great example of tolerance, bravery and determination. This was only spolied in the closing comments of one cowboy who thought the women would be better off in the kitchen no matter how well they had done! Oh well!

Without meaning to be patronising, I was also really impressed by the number of cowboys that spoke really good English.

just had to go watch it after all these comments. I thought Gemma had the best attitude of all ...... althought there were aspects, like the castration, she was not happy with she recognised that this was a different country and culture. Imo it is not like they were being intetionally cruel or it was a sport to them , they were being responsible in not letting just any male horse breed. It struck me that there were many shots of the knives being kept very sharp which would lessen the time taken to perform the castration and they took care to disinfect the knife and the stallion. My heart was in my mouth when watching the river crossing even though I knew they all made it I agree with Chrisse, Nickie was "man" enough to accept Gemma as leader and backed her up when decisions had to be made ..... and its hard for someone who has worked her way up in the business she's in where that super confidence and self belief is essential to step back ....... she was a REAL team player when the chips were down. Brill programme , I shall watch it next week ! oh and yes, dont all those cowboys put many of us to shame in the language stakes, brill english , I didnt need the subtitles to understand them
