hi all, I'm in Annan, Dumfriesshire. So although its not really Cumbria its as close as dammit!!! I will be at the Greenlands demo, has volunteered to help but now sadly cannot.
I have one horse on a years loan/ trial as she is a wee bit of a project but wonderful! Unfortunately this may have to change as I injured my knee a week ago and may need it operated on which may mean I would not be able to work with her for 6 months ( as in not much out or any other duties as well as the fun stuff!)
Any suggestions as to how to deal with my predicament would be warmly welcomed!! xxx

Hi harryhorse. We have been looking at farm property around your area recebtly on the net. It looks lovely! What are the drawbacks, if any to the area, and most importantly, whats the horsey scene like? Are the beaches rideable?

Hi Dona, Good choice of area!! Having grown up in the area I took it for granted but can say that I certainly appreciate it more since I lived away for four years and then returned. Beaches are generally rideable but beware which part of the coast you are at. I live in Annan and used to hack on the shore from the town but you need to do it regularly and be extremely careful to have a good knowledge of the tides and shifting sands. There are areas of quicksand so it is just a case of common sense and caution. However, if you move west along the coast approximately two miles the sands are perfect and easily accessible from the village of powfoot. There is also a couple of horse box friendly car parks in the village I am lucky enough to keep my horse on a farm half a mile from powfoot and plan to get down there sometime this winter and see how far west I can go as I know my father has successfully walked his dog all the way to the Brow Well which is a good few miles! Otherwise I know people hack on the sands around Gretna and eastriggs but I am not sure of how safe and accessible that area is. Hacking in general is a mixed bag depending on your particular location but people are pretty horse tolerant here, its not unusual to see a horse standing at the traffic lights in Annan High street! The horsey scene is pretty lively I would say but then I have nothing to compare it to. One addition unique to this area and the Scottish Borders is the Common Ridings and Riding of the Marches celebrations which take place in many local towns including Annan, Dumfries, Lockerbie and Langholm. I have ridden Annan and it is an experience, especially the gallops on the sands with 100 other horses in the middle of the Solway! I personally don't compete but there is an active Pony Club, Riding Club and Hunt in Dumfriesshire and all hold regular events. I would say most levels of competitor are well catered for and there are plenty of small equestrian centres holding regular competitions. Also there are plenty of summer Agricultural and Horse shows to be found. Another advantage I guess is the area is so close to the M6 and A74 and not too far from Ayrshire if you do compete at a higher level and need to travel Anyone would think i was on commission!!! If want any other info do ask, I may be able to get farmer and horsey person opinion on particular areas/ farms cheers xxx
