At last i am all set to go and my first rescue pony from france is reserved for me. It feels so good to save a life. I have decided to bring home the little 9 month old norwegion fjord. He is apparently unhandled and i cant wait to bring him home and give him a second chance - although i have said that if the little black filly is about to get put on the meat lorry, i will find the funds and bring her over too. Please someone rescue her!!
Would love any advice if anyone else has taken on an unhandled foal from there, were they best in or out when brought home, feeding etc - worried if i let him out will never catch him again, but equally worried he may get depressed being in 24/7 untill a little more friendly - how have you guys found things.
I have had unhandled new forests before who were able to stay in a stable with an outside part untill handled, which was great but dont have that choice this time -
very excited!!

Thats great news! well done, is he on the equinesection website? If he is I'll go have a nosey at him.. thats great that you are giving him a chance... If you've had unhandled newforests then you'l no what to do when he arrives.. what are your plans long term? I have 2 french trotters from France...

Hi, you could always fence off a smaller paddock for him rather than being in 24/7. Look forward to hearing all about him....and poss her! Good luck....just see how things are when he or they arrive as to how you do things. I just tried to do the most stressless things possible for my boy when he arrived. He was fenced within my paddock, he was able to see my other boys but not touch. He was fine like this.

If he is very wild/scared then your best bet if possible would be to have a very small paddock, round pen sort of size, where you could herd him into a stable. It took a long time for ours to really settle and begin to trust but they have all been so different. The one thing I would say is absolutely essential though is to have him in a small area to start with. Have you seen LizPs thread on the hall of fame, about her work with Zorelle? she has kept a diary of her progress and you may find some tips from there. Good luck with him,its heartbreaking when you see them and even more so when you realise how gentle they are.xx

Hi Trudee, thats brilliant news ;D I would leave him in for a very short while and crack strait on with working quietly with him to the point of him being happy to wear a head collar. If he is truly unhandled, you should be able to achieve this in a matter of hours.
I don't know where you live, but can I draw your attention to my post at the top of the page about help with genuine rescue horses?
Have fun with your new baby, and do feel free to PM me if you would like a chat - I LOVE working with unhandled horses ;D

ooh debutante any info on this breed would be really helpfull as i have always had new forests up to now.
Oh and yes please zoe for a visit, i am just outside reading in mortimer - i will let you know when he is over
My plans for now are to keep him untill he is a friendly happy chappy, and then see about rehoming him and using the funds to bring another one over - that was my plan when i managed to secure a small private yard attached to a private house - no politics involved then. But its such a worry with all the news as to where these ponies end up when re-homed/loaned out.
But i thought if he was only advertised through specialist websites like the fjord society/natural horsemanship sites to ensure an experianced home. If not he will stay with me and be my riding pony in a few years time!!
I am intending to do some fundraising and awareness but need to check wether this is allowed or not - i work for virgin vie and we do a really good charity square scheme to raise money for CLIC that i think could work for this - I know there are people out there who would love to help but dont have the initial funds to bring them over/vets etc and im sure if i could raise some funds we may be able to give some of the older ones who deserve to live their life out with some dignity a better chance. The funds could be used to help anyone who can bring one over with travell or initial vet visits - and of course is a known person to this sort of group so they dont end up in wrong hands again.
I have lots of thoughts milling around my head and just feel i must be able to do more for them. I know it is not a charity but im not sure on the laws with regards to to fundraising - Im sure it is fine as long as you dont use the word charity when fundraising - does anyone know!!

trudee did you get my pm?here is a link to the fjord society too - i had emailed them a few weeks back about an old fjord that someone told me about in france to see if they would be interested in helping them but i didnt hear anything www.fjord-horse.co.uk/. when i rescued zorelle i had it in local papers in essex where she is staying at the moment and in my area too. so yeah get it in your papers!! - i also emailed over 400 people including virgin most of the companies , all equestrian brands and celebrties and had about 3 lame replys! so if you can get in any way that would be fab. ohh keep the fjord you will love it!

right just checked on the website and here is their statement Animal Testing Policy
At Virgin Vie At Home we are committed to helping to bring about an end to animal testing for cosmetics and toiletries. To this end, we:
Do not test finished products on animals. Do not test any of our ingredients on animals. Do not commission tests on animals, to be carried out on our behalf. Safety is of paramount importance to us and all of our products undergo rigorous safety assessments by qualified scientists followed, where applicable, by supervised testing on human volunteers.
hope this is correct. It is always whet i have been led to believe but if you have any new info please do pm me

hi there shelly, this is going to be a new one on me - im used to new forests and it has been a while since i have had one this young, but loved the experience when i had my 2 unhndled new forests 8 years ago. Im up and ready for the work, but i love the quiet time you need to spend with them, he will be helping me as much as i him!!! I see in the picture he has a headcoller on but appernetly not handled at all. How is your little man now - would love you to pm me with how he has gone and what you have done with him on his journey so far- i know the fjords are meant to be a lovely breed and mine is fjord but doesnt have his papers either. Where abouts are you in the country - wouldnt it be lovely to have a little show one day so we could all meet our wonderfull rescues.
