Couldn't agree with you more sarah re the more accommodating countries, climate-wise. Looking at those bellies was interesting because they are all so different and you are also dealing with an unknown mare. She may have popped out numerous foals and totally knows what she is doing, but you don't know if that is the case or not. I would say a February foal is very early, but then again, I'm not a meat man. We guage it so that our mares foal when it's not too cold. In some states in the US they are foaling in January because they have the climate. Here in the UK we don't so we usually aim for April onwards. I will get some pics of one of our mares who is due to foal this year, but not until June.
In the meantime - I am on tenterhooks about Bonita.

Gosh, yes that must be awful! I get in a state if we get 2 days with snow and cant poopick!lol! It does look so pretty out there, but I think australia or spain would be my choice for emigrating! Heck No! Too many things to bite you in Aus, and in Spain you are liable to wake up to them bulldozing through your land just because they want to! ;D

No - not in Canada but go there periodically as our stud is based in the UK, Canada and USA. Canada is an extremely beautiful country, but sod that kind of weather. No thanks! I was born in Scotland, which isn't a whole heap warmer - lol. But now live in Bath, Somerset. I suppose we are positively tropical compared to the Highlands and Canada. When we get phone calls from Canada saying it's minus 25 and they cannot take the horses out of the barn because it's too cold and icy they cannot even walk. Horses over there are in an indoor barn all toasty and warm. It's a brutal climate.

lady vet came out last night just to give the girls the onceover. wanted to see what she thought as I will be away for a week in 2 weeks time and am hoping that nothing will happen whilst im away! in her opinion she thinks bonita is due in about 6/7 weeks, bearing in mind that she like us hasnt got any background on her. hopefully if she waits to we get back and we can tell when the foal is imminent then the vet said she would come out. I know that the chances are that she will have it in the middle of the night with no problems, but would prefer it if could have vet there even just to watch! omg still cant believe this is going to happen! ;D

Doh!! Just realised that question was directed at Lolamae (in Candada. I feel a bit silly now Unless there is a quote it's a bit hard to keep up isn't it? I am always getting it wrong. catg, whereabouts are your horses based in Canada then? In the south where I am it's warm, well, relatively. We've had 18" of snow on the ground max, since November, usually a lot less. Up in NB they have 3'!!! It's PLUS 1C today, melting again, so it will freeze tonight and we'll be skating on the garden tomorrow. Sarahfox, me a Canadian? Not yet, I am working on it, just waiting for my Permanent Residency to come through, Citizenship after that We think it will be very advantageous for our daughter to have dual Nationality.

foolonahorse, so you are looking at April sometime then? Have you got somewhere good and warm to stay when you are on night watch? I always admire those who rough it in a loosebox! My idea of foal watch is a monitor next to the bed and an alarm call every hour!

Lolomae - the horses in Canada are on Prince Edward Island, but only a couple of Quarter Horses. The rest are Standard Breds who race on the track. (It's a long story, but our partner in the stud ran off with a Canadian horse trainer, so she is in to Reining and he is into Pacing!)
David is coming over to PEI in 2008 to do a Reining Clinic.
I don't envy you with the weather. Spoke to Canada tonight and it's still cold!!

lolamae- vet said she thought about beginning of april- but it wouldnt surprise me at all if bonita surprised us before then ;D I think she will do it furtively, as although she is better to what she was- I think she will plan to have it when there is no-one around and not give any indication at all! I dont mind but I dont think I will be given the opportunity to watch- got the vet on standby as well!
