Hi, I have a very pretty colored arab x american saddlebred 2 yr old filly. She came to be with a clipped bridle path, but i have decided to grow that out. I was under the impression that as a x with a saddlebred she could have american braids, or be natural. but have been told she must be pulled & plaited as she is a part breed.... yet the lady who owned her before said she should have the clipped bridle path....hmmm! can anybody help?

I have no idea for any american/ saddlebred classes, but CHAPS have issued new rulings on saddlebreds. I think you can have them natural or pulled and plaited for in hand, but they must be pulled and plaited for ridden classes. You can see the rules at www.chapsuk.com

Thanks lovely lace. They most certainly are lovely horses. She is 50% arab 50% saddlebred out of shahrlim, & the american saddlebred stallion Premier color. I know that part bred arabs should be pulled & plaited, as a rule, but just not sure if the same rule applies to x paints & saddle breds. I would really like to show her (inhand) naturally, but dont want to be marked down for that. also, is it acceptable to show her in an arab halter? or must she be shown in an inhand bridle?...Only with an arab halter having the chain i feel i have a little more control should i need it & they are just so very pretty!

If you are showing her in PB and Anglo classes, or in general youngstock classes, she should be plaited and trimmed. It is perfectly acceptable to trim a small bridle path to make the headpiece sit flat. She should wear an in hand bridle with a nylon in hand bit or chamois leather wrapped , small ringed jointed or straight snaffle.( wrapping it encourages the horse to mouth the bit) An Arab bridle with a chain, is neither acceptable or kind for a young horse (or any horse for that matter) You should lead her with a plain leather, or webbing lead rein, not one with a chain, attached to the noseband and the bit with a 3 way coupling, so your are mainly leading her off the noseband and not spoiling her mouth. Good luck

ps Only traditional coloureds are shown and look good, in their natural state. Lighter breeds always look better plaited

special sparkle, thank you for your comments! Im suprised to hear you say arab halters with chains are not kind...I recently placed my hand under the chain of one & actually have to say, i could hardly feel it, so didnt think it was un kind. but thank you for your comments. I will have to post a pic of her on here.

Hi Kaliegh, Whatever you think of Arab halters, (and I personally hate them) they are not acceptable or correct in any other type of conventional in hand class.

Just to point out that the bridle path should not be more than one and a half inches --------not that awful American shave

Oh dear that's awful, you'll just have to pull the rest and grow it out-----poor you. Has it grown back long enough to plait yet?
