Nick started life as a conventional, mixed, vet in Yorkshire in ’92 after six years at Edinburgh Vet College. During his three years near Bridlington, then in Helmsley he began investigating alternative medicine, notably homeopathy. The decision was between being a conventional vet who dabbled in homeopathy and nailing his colours to the mast and learning it properly. He decided on the latter.
In ’95 he moved down to Chichester to a mixed practice offering homeopathy alongside conventional medicine. He had four eventful years at the practice during which he gained his veterinary membership of the Faculty of Homeopathy, trained for a year with the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society, began looking into raw food feeding for dogs and cats and natural equine feeding and eventually started his own practice in ’99.
The move to start his own practice was driven by several factors. There were very few vets who were working exclusively in the fields of Homeopathy, Acupuncture and Nutrition and he felt that this was a niche that needed to be filled to allow owners greater choice in the therapies available to their animals. He also felt uncomfortable offering the two medical philosophies side by side. They make very uneasy bedfellows; orthodox medicine is concerned with rapid pharmaceutical alleviation of symptoms. More holistic therapies seek to re-establish balance in the body, to strengthen the body’s innate ability to cope with anything nature can throw at it. He felt more at home with a philosophy based on equilibrium than on molecular manipulation.
His emphasis now is on integrated medicine; to work with conventional colleagues to offer the patient the very best therapies depending on that individual’s needs. If they need pharmaceuticals, my conventional colleagues use them. I will then work with a temporarily relieved patient in this way to establish long term equilibrium and health by using homeopathy, acupuncture and nutritional methods.
Horses form an influential part of his day to day work. In particular he had developed a fascination for:
Post-viral Fatigue/Chronic leucopoenia/Equine M.E
Hormonal dysfunction e.g. Cushing’s disease/reproductive problems.
Bowel disease
The barefoot movement,
although he is more than happy to discuss any aspect of health, homeopathy, acupuncture and nutrition in relation to the horse.
Please feel free to ring the practice or send an email. Please NB - He is unable to give detailed advice on any patient that is not under his care, but is happy to travel throughout the country.
He currently writes for Horse Magazine, does articles for Your Horse, Horse and Rider and has recently edited the George Macleod book ‘The Treatment of Horses by Homeopathy’ available on Amazon.
