Just wondering whether anyone has any suggestions for a saddle to fit a wide backed welsh cob who has no withers, I currently have a dressage stlyle saddle but find that I am riding on my crutch and my legs could do with some more security with bigger knee rolls for galloping and jumping... I have never rally got on with this saddle as it had always fitted the horse and not me but at the time it was all I could afford., and it slips to the left, Any ideas would be really gratefully received, I ahve heard that Ideal are good for these kind of horses.

I have a larger version of a wide backed, witherless wonder and I tried many saddles before I settled on a WOW dressage saddle, it's a lovely saddle and a very good fit for my lad and the fit is adjusted when on his back with you on him. Excellent saddles.

I have a Saddle Co cob saddle for my Welsh D. He's quite wide, although perhaps not as wide as yours, it was made to measure for him last August and we both love it! It is really, really comfortable and has serge panels, which are really soft on your horse's back. I've never had any problems with it slipping and one of the best things about it is that the tree can be adjusted if your horse changes shape. Mine has and I've just had it adjusted - this only cost me the call out fee for the fitter as she brought the machine with her. Have a look here www.thesaddlecompany.co.uk/

our 15:2hh sec D mare is xxwide. we have a Thorowgood Cob saddle for over two years now and my daughter has ridden in it so much that the suede is wearing of the seat. We are not going to change it as it is working well for us. She would like a dressage saddle but only if we can find something that performs as well as our current saddle.

Another option is the Ideal Highland and Cob - that fits my Welshie D like a glove after my saddler tried on 15 other saddles to no avail!!!

My 14hh Icelandic has an xxwide thorowgood cob and it's perfect, really comfy for both of us. My mare has no withers and a totally flat back(proper table-top!), if your horse has more shape to the back, the wintec wide accomodates this, but definately thorowgood for a flat back.

We have a cliff barnsby wh saddle for our wide backed girl, she is in a no. 5 tree which is the XW gullet, it is straight enough cut for showing natives but meaty enough for hacking, jumping etc.

I have one from Black Country Saddles which was made to measure. My mare has no withers and is very wide, probably due to the touch of Percheron in her breeding which is ID X. I originally had a working hunter style saddle but have switched to a GP with a flatish saddle as opposed to the scooped style which seems to be the trend. Ideal is also quite good as we used one to break her in but she has grown to a barn door since then - stable name is Hippo!

As anon said earlier - maybe try a treeless like Heather Moffetts Phoenix or Kay Humphries Freedom Holistic (if you want a 'normal' looking saddle) or one of the Treefree or other slightly more unusual looking treeless saddle which usually cost less but are slightly 'odd' looking.

I used to have a tabletop Highland who I had an Ideal Highland and Cob saddle for, it fitted him really well and is a lovely saddle.

I have one of Heather Moffett's SBS treeless saddles for my Sec D mare - she's making the Fhoenix now instead of the SBS, but you might be able to pick up an SBS second-hand. I used to use an extra-wide Heather Moffett/Saddle Company Easi-sit dressage saddle - which is for sale if anyone's interested
