Subject : SWEET ITCH - GET THE VACCINE!!!

My friends horse had chronic sweet itch and was a very unhappy horse until this year. He used to wear a boett and she did all the recommended things, but to no avail.
This year she took part in the vaccine trials and he had to have a series of jabs. He now can live in the field at any time of day or night and he doesnt have to wear a rug at all. It really has transformed him. He has to go annually for a jab now, but it looks like he no longer suffers at all. He is so much happier and so is his owner as you can imagine.

Isn't this still under trials at the moment ? It was in the sweetitch news and they are looking for people to give horses to test it out.
I have heard some good things about it though !! If they weren't so far away I would take my horse too ! Will have to wait until it is available through the vet

Yes, this is still under trial, and is not available except under trial.
As soon as it is, you can be sure I'll be getting it.
I looked into the trials, but unfortunately we couldn't meet their required criteria.

No its not a steroid shot. My pony had that years ago and ended up getting laminitis and was eventually put down. I will ask my friend what it is .

There are three current types of treatment for sweetitch, as far as I know:
1 - Vaccine, still being trialled, only available if you're on trials. I'm not aware of any side effects for this one.
2 - Desensitisation treatment - lot of people confuse this with the vaccine. It's a completely separate thing. I'm not aware of any side effects for this either, but I know it doesn't work for every horse.
3 - Steroid injection - Again, sometimes confused with vaccine - can really help control sweetitch, but does have the side effect that it can contribute to laminitis - not sure what the odds are or how severe it can be - you'd need to ask your vet about that one.

My two year old had the vaccine last Friday whilst been gelded at Poole House, Alrewas, Staffs. Apparently it is from Holland but not licensed in the uk yet. He has to go for another one in two weeks time and then one jab anually.
The vet told me to vaccinate them before the midgy season and it should take about a month to kick in. It doesn't contain steroids that is a different vaccine so is perfectly safe.

Give the Sweet Itch Help line a call 01352 771718 or email horse@sweet-itch.com, but unfortunately you've missed it for this year. The jabs were in March, but they are hoping it'll be licensed for next year. The help line people will tell you and if so, where your vet can get it. Give them a call. My horse has had it - the jury's out because he doesn't start symptoms til June, and he has just rubbed his tail a bit in the last day or two.

Hi Red Spice my daughters horse had the vacine from Poole house last year. He had the first two at beginning of season and then had to have one around august/september. This year he has only had one so far and it is fantastic. No boet rug got switch for fly control and I have not seen him rub once yet. We clip him all year round and he is hogged but he seems a lot happier this year.
