Hi isi, maybe I'm being too sensitive. I feel strongly that we should all evaluate what we are being told and look for the commonsense or anecdotal evidence to back it up, and eventually we get to the point where we can come up with an informed opinion. Some people waded in with what appeared to me to be uninformed old wives tales, and we all need to look at what we do or don't do critically, in the best interests of our animals who are stuck with us, whatever they feel. I'm sorry if it seemed to be in any way patronising, it was simply meant to be - don't accept everything you're told at face value. There are lots of people here who have taken what they're told, checked it out for themselves and then made the best use of it, as I'm sure you do. Long may they continue!!

I remember being recommended to mix oat straw with hay on a 50/50 split a few years ago when we had a hay shortage in the South. It was a feed nitritionist who advised us. None of the horses on the yard had any problems.
Pie and Jubilee often make a beeline for their beds rather than their haynets when I've put fresh bales in.
