devestated my youngster has developed a splint must be running around in the field. Well its hard already was never soft/hot I have been putting splintex on but the vet has suggested injecting with cortisone. I am not sure about this as the risk of laminitis. But the splint needs to go as he is a show pony anybody tried this or success with the splintex?

no never tried it. cold hose it every day as well it does wonders and box rest to minimise the impact and making it bigger. Our 2yo developed a splint because she pulled her pectrol muscle and was trying to save it and throwing her feet down hard.

Sorry, no experience of this. Good point honey - maybe there is a reason he has got the splint - might be worth getting the rest of him checked - if he is unbalanced that may be contributing. Can you explain the link with laminitis - I understand it for oral/iv steroids, but intra-articular injections? Has the vet told you this, and has he quantified the risk? I would've expected the effects to be very localised.

Carols, can you explain what DMSO is please. My Orioni has 2 very large splints, (bought him with them, they're old) My Vet here explained that there is very little I can do now for him other than prevent them getting any worse which is to rub an anti-inflammatory balm on them every time he returns from a ride.... he also uses Biomagnetic boots.... I would be very interested on something that reduces them if this is what this product does. Sorry OP, can't contribute, just interested. I am sorry about yours.

DMSO is a liquid you paint on twice a day for 10days on 10days off. You can only get it through vets as it is pretty potent stuff! Unfortunatly you can no longer get it in the UK! But you can get it from Ireland. I would'nt recomened you try it without consulting your vet. or Cut a lemon in half and take the peel off. Bandage the segment bits on the splint. Change it every 24hrs. I know it sounds silly but i used this method on a sec B yearlig filly because she was one of those that had to charge round the field at 200mph! and threw a giant splint up. It reduced it loads so its well worth a go! Plus its really cheap!!! ;D

If you do manage to get hold of DMSO. Be carefull as it can burn.
A splint will go down in size over a period of time but will never usually completley dissapear.

Is DMSO the same as Bone Radiol? I think you can still get that, I am sure I have seen it in a saddlers shop.
If you youngster is quite young it is quite likely that the splint will disappear. I bought my 2 year old with a splint and it has gone completeley with no treatment. They can come from a knock as well as concussion from work/dashing round the field.
I did have an older horse that had a splint and I got ride of it with the Bone Radiol. I think I had to do it twice - i.e. put it on until the skin scabbed over, which reduced it a bit and then I left it completely for a bit and then re-treated it and it mostly went.

DMSO is not the same asBone Radial. You can't get DMSO anywhere other than the vets and its now been taken off them. I can't remember why but it was because of lack of use or something not becaue it did'nt work. But it is really strong stuff and you should consult your vet before trying to get hold of this.
