There are a few things I'd do first before long lining a horse for the first time. Firstly I'd lead the horse normally but with a long line in the other hand dragging along the ground. Then I'd have the long line in the same hand as the lead rope so it is dragging along the ground but between me and the horse. I'd do that on both sides and make sure the horse is desensitised to the lines so that if the horse did panic when being long lined the lines don't make it worse.
Next I'd make sure the horse is happy with the long lines touching him.
Then I'd attach the long line to the headcollar clip, put the line round the horse's hind end and move to the horse's head. Then I'd ask the horse to yield to the pressure of the line. This means the horse has to work out that he has to turn away from the handler to release the pressure. Again, I'd do that on both sides.
Then I'd move onto long lining with someone at the head to begin with.

right long reining is one of my all time fave things to do and your all going to fink im mad, which of coarse i aint, i belve the positioning of the body is paramount, and your energy too, like when your riding in an arena you would concentrate lets say on m, i do the with my energy in my belly button, with fleur who was wobbly on the long riens i imagined the enery was going through my belly button up her bottom and was shineing out of her poll and chest, it works for me,best baby ive long riened EVER has to be guiness, he was long riening in seconds and doing great on his forst trip the the beach last year, with babies a kind of stand behind the eye at the quarters, that after they know they arnt snakes and can ground tye, get them to accept one trailing on the floor,i love watching there gate when they are walking just everything really, i get really excited about it all, :Plol

Ok sorry guys ... this is getting silly
I am butterfly ... well I was until my wings fell off then I was caterpillar. Then a moth was born and it was me.
I have a close relative that I have only just found out about called slug.
Anyway there is an intruder on the DG tonight called WURM .... she is really maggot who has nothing to do with me apart from we both are creepy crawlies!!
No connection
Butterfly=caterpillar=moth
maggot=WURM=mad person

Vicky, I start them off on the lunge at walk. The most important thing is to get them to go away from you - and the way to do this traditionally, and it works, is to always line yourself up with their hip and drive them away.
