Bailey (3 this year) is out 24/7 and was unrugged until only a couple of weeks ago. His coat is very fine (he's Hanovarian) and he's now got a lightweight on and is plenty warm enough. He was getting miserable in the really cold weather and is now happier in his rug, but was fine until recently. Last year was the same and I took it off again as soon as the weather warmed up enough (March/April ish).
The 40 something year old connemara in the field near Bailey is unrugged all year round, but he grows a much thicker coat. All my previous native ponies have always been unrugged.

i rugged all mine tonight as snow is forcast. 5 are extremelly hairy so are just in medium weights and one has a full clip so is in a heavyweight.
I only rug them if high winds/heavy rain/snow are forecast as they have no shelter (except the clipped horse who is rugged 24/7)

Hello I don't rug my horse at all, and he has a low trace type clip. But then again he is Icelandic & finds anything over 5 degrees positively tropical when he has his winter coat on. Emma S
